Hi,

I just got Guadalcanal for Christmas and have yet to play a full game but before I do, I need a few questions answered.

1) Does it cost 1 move for planes (fighters/bombers) to cross from airfield to sea (or vice versa). I know the rulebook says it costs 1 move from homebase to home seazone, then 1 move from seazone to homebase. But once you are on the main map, does it still cost 1 move to go from airfield to sea (and vice versa)?

2) Can a transport/destroyer load from any island which touches the seazone it is in? Can a transport/destroyer unload onto multiple islands which touch the seazone it is in?

3) Can fighters/bombers hit submarines during the sea attack phase? Do they need supporting ships in the water to do so, or can they do so if enough planes are present (I think it needs 5 battle dice to hit a sub, so minimum of 5 planes needed from what I can tell).

That's all I have so far, looks amazing though! Can't wait for my 1st game this weekend!

Welcome, Julez!

Yes, it costs one movement point each time a plane crosses a boundary between zones, whether those zones are land or sea.

2) Can a transport/destroyer load from any island which touches the seazone it is in? Can a transport/destroyer unload onto multiple islands which touch the seazone it is in?
Yes to both.

3) Can fighters/bombers hit submarines during the sea attack phase? Do they need supporting ships in the water to do so, or can they do so if enough planes are present (I think it needs 5 battle dice to hit a sub, so minimum of 5 planes needed from what I can tell).
Yes, planes can hit subs, with or without supporting ships. It doesn't take any minimum number of battle dice to hit any unit. If the unit you actually hit on the chart doesn't exist, you read the chart from the left until you get to a unit that does exist and apply the hit to it. So, if there is only one unit in the zone, any hit(s) will hit it.

Thanks for the clarification I had the same question about planes. Opps I guess we played the first couple wrong. Makes much more sense and increases the need for forward airbases.

It has been awhile since I played a board game (mostly minis). Great game so far!

While this is standard A&A air rules, it does bug me in that it completely prevents bombers from Rabaul from hitting ships in the slot or Guadalcanal proper, or US bombers from New Caledonia from hitting anything in Bougainville or New Britain. Historically, B-17s and G4Ms could hit just about any target in or near the Solomons.

Thanks for the replies!

I had my first game last night, and it was a close call, but Japan (myself) took it in the end following a tie for 15 points.

We played the aircraft the way you indicated, which also made sense to me, since it increases the need for airfields/carriers.

Overall, a very nice game!!
