Without creating house rules.

1. In Gaudalcanal is it possible to attack the home bases by air, ship, and amphibious landing? I think bomber and fighter raids are realistic but a full on landing not so likely.

2. Does Rabaul and New Calendonia count towards reinforcement points or just islands on the main map?

3. It seems like Artillery can fire more than once in a turn. On ships near by (attack sea) and on land pieces in the same zone (land attack) is this correct?

I am new to the game.

Thanks
SirNeil

Welcome, SirNeil!

Yes, base cards may be moved onto and attacked by enemy forces.

2. Does Rabaul and New Calendonia count towards reinforcement points or just islands on the main map?
Just the islands on the board. If you haven't already, check out the FAQ (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/article/ah20071115a) for the erratum concerning reinforcement points, as well as other information.

3. It seems like Artillery can fire more than once in a turn. On ships near by (attack sea) and on land pieces in the same zone (land attack) is this correct?
Yes. Units that have multiple attack values may fire once per turn for each attack value that they have, assuming that there are units of each of those types (air, sea and land) that can be attacked. Battleships may fire up to three times per turn - once at air units, once at sea units, and once at land units or airfields.

Thank you Krieghund for the answers and the link to the FAQ. Look forward to seeing more.

TOTAL VICTORY

If you play for total victory (taking of the opponents home base) as opposed for victory points is the game still evenly balanced?

How much longer does it take to play for totally victory.

Historically Rabaul was next on the Admiral Nimitz scope in the area. Famous air-sea battles of Truk. I imagine had the Japanese secured Gaudalcanal they might have gone after the American bases at New Caledonia.

Any thoughts on how to play for total victory.

I haven't given it much thought. I imagine it would take about twice as long as a standard game.

We thought about it too. But mind that it will really change the nature of the game as the whole idea of building air fields changes...

I think it would be an equally interesting game to play for total victory (home base take over). It would be like taking and holding the capitals in the original A&A. Airbases would be the means to an end.

Time zero or D-Day seems to be the night the marines landed in Gaudalcanal soon after the naval battles of Midway and Coral Sea and the only opposition they found was a contruction division building a nearly finished landing strip (airbase).

I might also suggest that the Americans start with a damaged airbase to represent a nearly finished airbase. I don't know how this might effect game balance but if it does the Japanese could also start with a damaged airbase in Bougainville. OR no scoring is made in the first round of the game.

Any thoughts
