I remember some time ago, a group was planning on developing an Epoch 8 covering roughly the 20th Century, or at least the first half. Has anyone heard anymore about that?

Hi.

I've thought a little about epoch VIII, but I don't think it would work very well. Most of the Empires would be the same as in Epoch VII, which would be a little weird. The epoch structure doesn't apply well past 1915, as there has not yet been so much rising and falling of new powers as in the other epochs.

The combat structure too does not have as nice a flavour if applied to the nuclear age. As warfare has evolved technologically, the amount of soldiers in your army begins to count for less. Sheer strength of numbers, in History of the World, is too powerfull for the 20th century.

I'm sure it's possible to come up with something playable, but the game seems a nice length with seven epochs. All considered, I'm inclined to leave it alone.

I like History of the world a lot, but I think it comes to a natural hault at the dawn of WWI. Perhaps epoch eight will make for a nice expansion set in a few hundred years, but I can't see it yet.

Happy gaming.

I think Epoch 8 could work though it might require extending the game a little into the future. The seven cultures I would use are a combination of nations and political movements:

Fascism: Capitals are Berlin and Toyko. The rise of fascist governments in the 1920's and 1930's.

Communism: Capital is Moscow. The Soviet Union's victory of Germny and the rise of communism after WWII.

Democracy: Captial is Washington DC. The West's victory over Japan and Germany and its victory in the Cold War.

Nationalism: Capitals are New Delhi and some city in South Africa. The rise of anti-colonialism in the post war period.

Islamic Fundalmentalism: Capital is Mecca. The rise of militat Islam threatening the West.

Militant Democracy: Capital is New York. The west becomes more agressive by attacking potential agressor nations.

The New WorlD Order: Capital is? Between 2030 and 2050 a new world power emerges after the west exhausts itself defeating terrorism. My candidate would be Brazil.

This list of cultures would span 1920 to 2050. Obviously it needs to be fleshed out and tested to see if it would work.

I think your approach would work a lot better, Just Me.

My candidate for NWO would be China rather than Brazil.

Are they listed in the order you'd have them played? That order looks pretty good, the only question in my mind being the sequencing for Nationalism. That one's tricky.

Hmmm... both China and Brazil could be good - maybe before a more futuristic new world order with Brazil, there could be a militant communism (since there'a a militant democracy anyway) or maybe call it a 'modernized communism' or 'capitilistic communism', lol, centered in China.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Now if AH/Hasbro could just make us an expansion like that complete with the pieces and our ideas posted here... lol.

4. Communism - NE Plain, Stalin, Moscow, 15
5. United Nations - Appalachia, Rooseveldt, New York, 20
6. Asian Nationalism - Ganges Valley, Nehru, Delhi, 9
7. African Nationalism - East Africa, Kenyatta, Nairobi, 7

ME. Arab Nationalism - Lower Nile, Nasser, Cairo, 5

In addition, the epoch 7 Japan card is removed and replaced by

Awesome!! I like that very much. I would only change United Nations into United States Pro-Democracies.
Very good though Clausey.

If you review my previous post on this thread you'll see that I've already done this:

Just rename:

Nato : United Nations

Banana Republics : Latin American Nationalism (move to epoch 7)

African Self rule: African Nationalism

Plus, add Asian Nationalism and DocZ's your uncle.

The events in brackets are meant to give a more educational flavour to the game.
(One for the conspiracy theorists at the end, there.) ;)

I have a large spreadsheet of nations I wrote up once with a view to an "Advanced History of the World" game. Can't get excel files to post here, though.
There's a site out there somewhere with an AHOTW idea, I'd take it a bit further though with successor states, barbarians "settling down" to found cities and so forth. Not that long since Hasbro did a remake though so we'll have to wait a while for this one...:(
