View Full Version : A&A meets Risk in... Arms Race: The Invasion of Earth
series

As many of you know, I am working on an Axis and Allies Variant which combines Risk 2210 and Axis and allies in a super-variant! The game is not quite finished yet, but I have recieved so many requests for it, I decided I could at least explain what the deal is...
Arms Race?
The game takes place in 2005. That's right, next year. Scary, huh? Anyway, these evil alien guys found out about something we have that they don't: Nuclear Weapons. So, why not invade and steal them? That is their logic. When 1/3 of the worlds nuclear weapons falls to alien hands, they win. The weapons are placed around the world according to actual placement. The Humans must defend the nuclear weapons, as the aliens may attack anywhere. Not any time, however.
The Aliens start out on different planets- Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto. Of course, Pluto is the farthest from earth, so men from there take a bit longer. Now, the aliens have to actually fly their men through space in order to make it to earth, but of course, earth may not take that sitting down. They always may interfere by planting space mines and such, and eventually making the first human-space-warships. But the war is not just in space of course.
4 games in one?
There are 4 teams you can play as, all very unique: Major Nations, Minor Nations, Aliens, and... Mercenaries.
... Mercenaries?
The Mercenaries are humans who choose to side with the aliens. But like I said, it is not that simple. They move in secret. That's right, even though the Major and Minor nations can tell how many mercenaries there are, they can not tell where they are, at all. And also, mercenaries can attack at any time. They could even overthrow a nation and earn some nukes of its own to offer to the aliens. However, the Major and Minor nations can fight this with Spy Service- if they can guess where the Mercenaries are hiding and get a bit of luck, the mercenaries are shut down... for a while. This stops the mercenaries from, say, stacking on the east of America.
My country tis of thee...
So thats how the evil dudes win. But what about us? Eventually, you may invest in a space combat program. When the alien homeworlds are either destroyed or captured, or made worthless, the humans win. Of course, making sure earth is safe is necessary.
So what about the units...?
The units are made to be more modern-day stuff. Transport planes, jets, no battleships, missile subs/destroyers, and etc. And you don't gain IPC or anything in this game, you produce when you are asked to. In other words, unused production points are gone.
Combat System
The turns are very unique. The Humans and Aliens/Mercenaries each get to move before any battles. And there are no attackers or defenders. You attack when you need to. Where you need to. However you need to.
Well, post any feedback if you have any. I just wanted everyone to know what this variant will feature, since a lot of people are asking about it. Well, here ya go.

The Aliens start out on different planets- Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto.
Pluto isn't considered a planet anymore! I don't see how we can take you seriuosly series when you don't do proper research into your variants. ;)
Just kidding man, if it weren't for your wack ideas I don't know where i would get my laughs from!

The men in Mars are Martians, the Jupier men are "Jupitians", and the Pluto aliens are called "X-Soldiers"... maybe from a different planet...?

There's no need to suck up to series MasterHawk, Joe is absolutely right when he said: "you have stupid ideas" when he was referring to series. Unless you actually think this variant is awesome.... *gasping in horror*
Keep up the work series. I would say keep up the good work but i'm trying to not to lie as much. ;)

LOL!!! :D Hilarious, Vollick! :D See, series, this is why we keep you around... sheer entertainment value :D
Ok Series....not a bad idea!
Kind of makes me think of the movie 'independence day' (which was pretty popular).
I can see a AandA/2210 game like that. Don't know if I would play it though considering I don't own 2210.
Anyway, continue your work lil buddy, I believe you have a viable idea. (and you know I'm not just saying that because I love blasting other people's ideas!!)

heh heh...
Oh, and did I mention that the game is 2-10 players? Sure, it's rare that 10 people would be under the same roof playing the same war game, but there's always the possibility!
I'm trying to make the rulebooks as professional as possible. Yeah, rulebooks, theres 4 of them- one for every type of player (Major Nation, Aliens, Mercenaries, Minor Nations). That way, you only need to read what you need, not what everyone else reads, and so that you could effectively bring a set of rulebooks and all learn at once.
You're right, i'm sure the first person excited over this was you and then shortly thereafter nerdx became excited about the very same variant.... hrmmm this seems a little suspicious to me.
hah! I got ya there! nerdx hates the idea for this variant after his nasty encounter with the aliens in real life!
lollollololol that's funny series....

lollollololol that's funny series....
I think you should consider a career with a gaming companyOnce, for a school project, I made a board game based on Axis and Allies and the classic novel "Animal Farm" (George Orwell I believe). It was called "Animal Farm Conquest", and it featured 4 scenarios to battle under. It included all sorts of miniatures, such as pigs, horses, cows, men with M16s, houses, and a windmill that you could knock down. The objective was to capture land for money and eventually take your opponent's "Capital" under the different scenarios, and I think one was an "eliminate all enemies" scenario. It was a cool game, but that was quite a few years ago, before I "knew what I do now" about board games (i think i did that after only playing my second game of Axis and Allies 2nd Edition).
As for a career, I would feel more proud of myself if I, say, found a cure for cancer, rather than made cool games.

I mean, um, as someone who has spent months rebuilding both the Axis & Allies and Risk turn sequences, I wish you great fortune in uniting those two, Series.

Playtest 1 was conducted today. Here's an overview:
Note: Human Rockets were not used in the playtest. A human victory was achieved when, at any point, the aliens had no more earth bases.
The game took about 3 hours. It was a human victory, and in the end, the aliens had 5 nuclear weapons, instead of the 10 they required.
Turn 1: The Martians invaded Australia, the Mercenaries invaded along the islands. Both were successful, and the Martians created a base in Austrailia. However, on the Human side, the "War in Iraq" was finally won by America, with the help of the Indian airforce (Oh say can you see...).
Turn 2: The humans repositioned their forces around the earth, and launched missiles at the Australian base. The Martians were weakened, however, Reinforcements from Mars arrived. On the same turn, the Jupitians landed in the eastern part of Russia/Korea. This was a major Nuclear expansion for the aliens. The Mercenaries were busy playing around in New Guinea. It was captured this turn, and converted into a base. The Martians captured more of Australia.
Turn 3: By now, the Mercenaries captured Japan*, a major setback for the Humans. The Aliens were advancing to the heart of Russia, capturing nukes on the way. The Aliens also got into Hong Kong... very bad for China.
*Note: Unlike Axis and Allies, Japan is not a major military power, and neither is Germany. These two sets of pieces are used for China and India, respectively.
Turn 4: Russia finally got back on it's feet and began a counter attack. The British helped with this conflict. America was preparing a major invasion, but the Plutions landed in Canada. They had the most powerful weapons, so all US soldiers were redeployed there**. The Indians were attempting to recapture the Mercenary islands/portion of the mainland, and the Americans and British in the Indian Ocean landed in Australia in a bloody battle.
**The conflict between the Americans and Plutions was not resolved by the end of the game, however, America was at a clear advantage.
Turn 5: The Indians captured east australia, the Chinese successfully pushed the Aliens out of Hong Kong, the Russians/British started pushing the Martians back.
Turn 6: The aliens landed in South America. However, the South American forces were able to hold them off. The British forces landed in Canada and won a victory against Mercenaries. The British/Russian Alliance pushed further into the heart of the Alien Bases. The Indians liberated all of Australia, except the portion the Americans/British were fighting in.
Turn 7: The Americans and British defeated the aliens in Australia, and the Chinese defended well in Hong Kong. The Russians destroyed the last Alien base.
For this playtest (based on the start of the game), it was over. The humans successfully destroyed all alien bases. However, in the full game, it would not be so easy, seeing how the Aliens and Mercenaries were not defeated completely. There are a lot of changes I still need to make (balancing issues amoung alliances especially- it seems that the Mercenaries had a very small role, as well as the Plutions), but let me tell you this: This game was awesome! The thing I like most is how each side has completely different play styles- the aliens have to "hit and run" while establishing bases, and the humans need to fight in more traditional Axis and Allies style, however, with more caution, since the aliens can come from the heavens at a moments notice. Very cool so far.
Hey series...where are rules? Not that I would play it (don't own 2210)...but would like to see how you conjoined these two.

I especially like how for "new units" it has a snowspeeder, ATST or whatever (giant walking robot thingy), artillery, and destoyer. Nothing out of place there :D
Maybe for next uncon there can be a "Find/Create a cover for Arms Race!"
