Hello Mr. Harris!

Some time ago you posted here on the board that you were surprised that so many questionaires packed with AAR asked for a A&A WWI. There also is a topic intensively discussed about this matter in the general AH Discussion forum for some time.

So the question is:
If we all ask you to do, would you consider to design an A&A WWI and how would the chances be for AH to give it a go?

best regards
xxstefanx

I know that HE stops by here every now & then, so hopefully, this won't fall upon "closed eyes" as opposed to "deaf ears" in that regard!

I think the problem with WWI would be the static nature of the war. It could still be good, but it would be very different than A&A (and it wouldn't be global either :( ).

Personally, I think WWI was too defensive to be a viable game in the AandA format...its boring man....but if it could be done in a 'Diplomacy' kind of way I would be up for that.

I was in the A&A WWI discussion in the general AH Discussion forum. There are many interesting ideas that WWI game will not be too "static" or "defensive". But I guess it is not up to Larry (even if he interests). The game publisher needs to buy into it first.

Hi DocD!

As in WWI (opposed to WWII) diplomacy was an important part of WWI (russian revolution, nations entering war during the conflict) there has to be an additional step for DIPLOMATIC ACTIVITY in the A&A turn order:

1. Diplomatic Activity
2. Weapons Development
3. Buy Units
4. Combat Move
5. Resolve Combat
6. Non-Combat
7. Place Units
8. Collect Income

P.S.: Have you intensively researched WWI? Western Front, Eastern Front, Balkan Scenario, Weapon Developments, Diplomacy...maybe you will change your opinion after that!;)
Though I must admit the Western Front was static most of the time but that does not necessarily mean a boring game!(Eastern Front was quite dynamic btw)

Hi stefan, yes I have read about WWI intensely. As a matter of fact I own The Idiot's Guide to WWI. Very good reference on the subject (even though the name may say otherwise).

And, I know about all the 'goodies' a WWI game could include, but that won't make the uninformed crowd anymore thrilled to get their hands on it. Ask the average joe on the street and he will tell you, WWI was about trench warfare.

Anyway, just my opinion.

@DocD

Hm "The Idiot's Guide" is a strange title. I dont think it is scientific, is it?

Besides, point is that more and more people who are interested in the history of war begin to discover WWI as WWII seems to hold nothing new to them.
(it's 90th anniversary of 1914 just to note!)

P.S.: Forgot: Did the "average joe" buy AAR? ;) Personally I more thought of the elbowmasters and krieghunds here on the boards! ;)

Well, it's scientific enough for the average joe and hardcore boardwargamer. But I've also read other...lets say...more scientific articles (eg encyclopedias and such).
I just thought it would be nice to own an easy reading reference (for occasions like this).

Anyway, I agree...after you have read and played WWII to death, then one would tend to look elsewhere for pleasure.
I've always wanted to see something more modern like a coldwar or WWIII game. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there isn't much of a reference on that subject.

I feel the same way that getting and giving WW-1 the decent treatment that it deserves can overcome the 'Trenchfoot' mentality that seems to permeate some people's thought processes! How many OTHER games have 'followed' History down the same exact path? Sure, they should be able to but it doesn't mean that in ALL of their playings, that once has the course of any game has gone that route. I can't recall anytime that this has been the case, which is precisely the point that we're trying to make, there doesn't HAVE to be endless Trenchlines, but the possiblity is provided. The people involved in this event didn't account for it either, but it just happened to have taken place.

Try posting on the WW I board, AH General Discussion.

Also try some contemporary WW I games, like Paths of Glory.
