note: Before you go any further.. yes I was probably dropped on the head as a small child :D
The Russian Navy
On Russia1 purchase a carrier and 1 sub.
Hit W. Russia with 2 inf and a fighter from Karelia. Move in everything from Moscow and Archangel (don't forget the AA gun on non-combat)
Land the fighters on Caucus and place you new navy in the Black Sea. hehe
The Results. If you are nuts enough to try this, one of two things will happen.
1.) Germany hits you with everything in range. Russia losses her navy but has saved Egypt and hopefully knocks out the German Med fleet. You've lost 24 IPC but you have also forced Germany to make some very unexpected decisions. It sounds costly but if Germany commits her fighters in this Naval engagement she won't have as many oppertunities to hit you and your Allies on G1.
2.) Your oppenent, impressed by your boldness, will allow the fleet to survive for a round (most likely with a counter attack into W. Russia). Now you have a fleet to play with. :D With another sub or transport you could threaten the Balkans or even Southern Europe.
If Germany goes after Egypt and fails to sink the Battleship in sz 13 then you might be able to move it to the Black Sea on UK1. If Germany does not go after Egypt and sends her Battleship to meet Britain's then you can move move the Destroyer to protect the Russian fleet and have the Indian fleet move into the Eastern med. I would only try this if you're playing with a friend.
Well there you have it. The only move I can think of that gives Russia a navy
Any thoughts?

Germany see a russian navy build.... decides to go with 10+ tanks every round
win or lose....

Historically speaking the USSR did in fact control the Black Sea throughout the war. This was used mainly to drop small infantry parties on the coast behind enemy lines.
My Redux rules give the Soviets a destroyer in the Black Sea as a starting unit.

As a German player, I'd simply stare at the gameboard in disbelief for a couple of seconds, then I would simply pretend this fleet doesn't exist and play as usual (maybe buying some extra tanks), taking egypt, sinking the sz13 BB, pushing into the Eastern front.
Or maybe I'd take the bait and buy 1 Cv, 3 tr on G1 and scare Uk. :)

At first look, with that IC in the Caucasus permitting to build naval units in the Black See, I think that many players made a little thought, just for a couple of seconds, to build a soviet navy, but as pagan said, you just need that 24 IPCs too much on R2 to spend them on a useless navy.
BTW a soviet navy in the Black See would perhaps stop German Amph. Assault on the Caucasus, something that last time did hurt me too much!:)

First let me ask you, is this a serious game winning strategy, or is it a "Let's get drunk and have fun" strategy? Or maybe even better, is it a handicap strategy if your playing someone like your girlfriend and you want to give her a chance to win?
I have done similar strategies when Im goofing around with a newbie, such as invading the USA as the Axis or something like that. Maybe this could be a new goof strategy, playing the Allies your goal would be that the Russians must have one of each sea unit plus two fighters in the Black Sea.
Sounds like fun anyway, I must admit that I did have my eye on that IC in the Caucasus when I first got the reveised game.

Interesting strategy, but I don't think it will help much. Threatening Africa and Southern Europe is the U.S.' job. Maybe it will allow the US to do this faster?

^^ Your girlfriend quote: that's classic!
J, if you try this in a game where we're partners as Allies, I'll reprogram TripleA so that I can bomb your fleet myself!
Unless we're playing our girlfriends.

Assuming you are talking about the original A&A, as a german player I'd just look up and see you are 8 infantry short in Karelia, and slam in with everything. Then, you're n a lot of trouble and your navy isn't going to do you a heck of a lot of good.

Wow. And here I thought the Russian naval pieces were only good for melting down and pressing into Japanese tank molds. ~ZP

Have you tried it yet or is it just one of those thought experiments? I enjoy interesting strategies especially for Russia but I think this strategy just may fall into the "special" category. It would be fun though to play a game where ever nation in the first turn has to do an unorthodox build. Have two for each nation and this could be one of them. The other could be build 2 fighters and save 4.
Now what would Germany's be? 4 fighters? 2 bombers and a fighter? Battleship and a Carrier?

That's a great idea, and hopefully there would be enough plastic left over to fill in the squished German tanks as well! :D
As you know elk, this is not a workable strategy for Russia. AC's make for poor tank and inf busters.

How about you can only buy units that cost > $8 turn one?

That would be an interesting twist alright! Talk about a game bender... like a pretzel. ~ZP

Hehe wow...
I didn't expect to get such a response on this one. :D I think we all can all appreciate that I some times smoke a little too much weed for own good... its when I do my most creative thinking. lol
But judging from the amount of comments in this thread I get the feeling that I'm not the only one out there who gets a glimmer in his eye when he looks at that Russian battle ship that AH taunted us with. This was the only idea I could think of... that could be salvagable. And unlike the fabled Russian navy that might make an appearance in round 13, after the Axis have been all but wipe out, this move has the advantage of allowing you to quickly reset the peices on the board when your friends start heckling and throwing beer bottles at your head.
Don't sweat EE I've had my fun in our last game. We can save this one for Ladies night

You are suggesting to land your russian fighters on the carrier, correct? I think that would be a bit risky.
