View Full Version : Crude online playing...

Well, I was thinking there's players all over the place, but many of us can't reach other groups... I know most of us in BW don't have the cash to fly around playin peeps across the nation (but hey, one of us wins the lottery, you guys better watch out! LOL )

So I'm thinking, set it up like some kind of online chess thing, but then how do you do random stuff? Hard... very. LOL

But some determined Risk Diceheads could use the random dice rolling feature in many chat rooms to at least do the game's dice rolling... so then how do you figure out the command cards? That's the hard one. I mean, drawing land cards for "random" or "card events" is easy... just number the cards and use the random generator... but command cards are harder. smile.gif

Could play REGULAR risk this way tho... somehow...

Okay, so I'm bunting ideas out... anyone else wanna weigh in on this and see how creative we can be?? smile.gif

You could use Zillions of games to generate random cards for a 2 player game. I dont remember if zillions supports more than 2 players online, heck I havnt managed to play online with it at all so far.

I think for such a purpose we will need someone to write some small client server program. The server will generate cards and dice and send it to all clients.

Good luck finding such a programmer...

I believe that Aide de Camp has a function that allows PBEM with games that have card decks. I've never used AdC so I can't be certain. Check their website for more details.

I just checked the Cyberboard (http://cyberboard.brainiac.com/) website and I see that v2.0 of Cyberboard also supports cardplay, and CB is free. I don't think there's a RISK 2210 electronic gamebox, but they're reasonably easy to build once you get the hang of it. Check it out.

Wouldn't someone who made a Risk 2210 electronic gamebox wind up getting a cease and desist letter from WotC's lawyers?

Depends on what you do with it. There's such a thing as "fair use." If you bought the game, you have the right to play it. Buy the game, make a CB gamebox for it, and use it with your friends. No one can object to that on any level, including legal. It's no different from building a database of the cards for your own use or making a scan of the map to use as wallpaper on your personal computer. If you share the gamebox with strangers who've also bought the game, I'd expect no problems. They have the same fair use rights as you. If you distribute the gamebox indiscriminately all over the web, you might attract some unwanted attention. If you distribute the gamebox AND an electronic copy of the rules so that no one ever needs to buy the game again, you will get "legalized" in a hurry -- as you should.
