..actually NO!- :D (CE is a cool game- you have to learn different strategies for different alien powers!)

Bought Cosmic Encounters for my younger cousin for Christmas. I wasn't sure about it since it didn't really look all that appealing and I hadn't heard all that many good reviews for it. The lady at the counter said it was great and that it was now out of print but I was still unsure. Anyway, we played it last night and I had a blast! Tremendous fun. The only beef I'd have with it is that its only 4 player...I don't understand why either they could easily have expanded it to 5-7 players which would have been much more interesting. Still, definitely worth the purchase. (Note this is not one of those games you can play by yourself like Axis & Allies and such...you really need all 4 players).

Cosmic Encounter is a classic...the alien theme actually isn't all that important. The game might just as well have been about wizards taking over castles, or hackers breaking into computer systems, or whatever. What's so cool about the game is the ally-with-your-neighbor / screw-yer-neighbor back-and-forth dynamic, and how every alien power lets you break the rules of the game (but not so much that you break the game). It's truly unique in that way.

It is a crying shame that the expansions (developed when the game was licensed to Mayfair) haven't been produced to match the beautiful new AH edition. Looking at the way the new game board was created, I've gotta believe that the plan was to add in a multiplayer expansion. As it stands now, if you splurged on two boards (or have a friend who also owns CE), I think you could pretty easily fit 5 or 6 galaxy arms around the warp--after that, a little paint, and there you go, multi-player expansion.

And for those y'all that don't know--www.cosmicencounter.com.
