I think that any nation should be able to switch sides at any time, or even better even start their own side. This would make the game way more interesting.

In 2nd edition, we had some wild games where we teamed up Germany and UK against the world.

But the best was Germany and USA against the rest.

I played that one with my brother, that was the USA and Germany. It is pretty funny to see the US attack Canada and merge its Altantic fleet with Germany, while it either spends all of its money to go full out against Japan or the UK.

Right, Japan had to go full out against USA and force a war in the pacific.

We once played Germany and Russia VS UK, Japan, USA. It was brutal. First we had a parade in London, then one in Tokyo, then later, much later, one in Washington. Of course with the old rule and HBs it was just a matter of time..... :)

Once, as the Japanese, I was propositioned by the Alliance to join up with them.
My German 'teammate' (absolutely the luckiest man I've ever met when it comes to games involving dice) was doing well enough to throw cash into Tech, whereas I was slowly being rolled up like a cheap rug by the US juggernaut (ably assisted by my own abyssmal die rolls).
Well, the German player was on the phone (scheduling a date as I recall), indicating that he was not the least bit interested in the plight of his fellow Axis power, so I joined the alliance. I was assisted in my assualt into Europe with US transports which, once the German player returned and glanced at the board, made it look as if I had successfully landed troops in China and driven out the US. He about had a stroke when he was told he was all alone in his quest for world domination and proceeded to whine for the remaining 30 minutes of the game as he was wiped from the map (we emphasize the 'total' in total victory). 20 years later we still manage to raise is ire by reminding him of that beating.
Of course he can still point to countless other victories wherein the linchpin of a given campaing/battle was sheared by his inability to roll badly... ever.
