Does anyone know if there are plans for expansion sets for RISK 2210 AD? Like more regions (Mars, ...), extra command cards, extra rules, ...

Thanks

No expansions are planned at this time. There will, however, be a repackaged version (in a bookshelf box) later this year.

Any changes to the parts or rules? Will it still be sold under the Avalon Hill name?

AFAIK there will be no changes other than to the packaging.

I like the souns of this...

Is there any chance that the Gen Con promo command cards could be reprinted and included in the new package? That would be great!

I'm not sure what this would require. I imagine it is either very easy, or would require a disgusting amount of red tape and hassel. It sure would be nice though, and it might just help sell afew games.

If that change was planned, I think Anthony would have mentioned it in response to my question. Since his answer was "no changes to anything but packaging," my assumption is that there will be no new cards. I'll pass on the suggestion, though.

Yeah but adding anything new would be severely unfair to the people that already purchased the game.

Hey, we saw the game when it Debuted at GenCon... and one of our triad actually played in a demo, but never got or heard of these "special" command cards?

Anyone care to elaborate on what they were? If anything else, the blank cards could be used in place of them if we knew what was on them...

Thanks!

For anyone who has not been following the information regarding organized play and Risk 2210 tournaments, it looks like there are going to be bi-monthly tournements featuring playtest expansion sets!

The tournament winners will recieve a copy of the proto expansion rules and pieces (or whatever components the expansion entails). I personally think that's pretty good news!

I beleive I read that the first proto expansion will be Mars. I may mistaken on a detail or two here (I'm just so excited), so check it out yourself by clicking the organized play link at the left side of the homepage.

Cheers.

It seems to me those "major" cards would make the cards even more overpowering and increase the randomness as to the outcome of a game.

Hello Tyveil

"It seems to me those "major" cards would make the cards even more overpowering and increase the randomness as to the outcome of a game. "

Hmmm...

I've been playing with the major cards since only a month or two after the basic game came out, and I tend to disagree strongly with your statement. Granted Major Power is easilly the most powerfull command card in all five decks. Still, This card requires quite a bit of energy to use well. The presence of the Major cards tend to create an early game race for the diplomacy cards. In a large game they will frequently all be gone by the second year, often before Major Power is even played (limiting the player to eight cards max, not ten).

Anyway, the other five cards dramatically increase the strategic options on year five. Most significantly, the Major cards seem to provide more ways to win without going last. Specifically:

Major Death allows for water territories to be more easilly protected. Basically this means that a player not going last on year five has a better chance of holding their territories and colonies, as it becomes harder for someone to take them.

Major Destruction allows a player to fortify the moon like never before. This can be used to hold territory either till the end of year five, or just long enough to launch an assault on the Earth from the moon during year five.

Major Flowers can open up attack routes on year five to weaken players who play later in the year. The card can also be used solely for the benefit of denying a player their continental bonus, as it creates a vacant territiroy in a continent that someone may have previously controlled.

Major Pain allows for a very affective attack campaign. This can mean that a player going second last or third last on year five can stand a better chance of severly weakening, or outright elliminating the player(s) to follow. Actually, Major Death and Major Destruction can both be used in this manner as well, as the removal of space stations and commanders can reduce the defensive capacity of the last turn player.

All this being said, the Major cards don't really have that drastic an impact on the game. Half of these cards won't even be drawn most of the time, and when they are drawn they are expensive, and not always practical to play. The only consistent change in the game is the early race for the diplomacy cards. Major Power is the only card that seems to get played every game, but unless the player who draws it is already doing extreemly well, it will not provide that drastic an edge.

I could rant about this for some time. In conclusion, I do not beleive that these cards turn the game up-sided-down, but the extent to which they do affect the game mostly involves an increase in the year five dynamic - even if they are not played, simply by their potential to be played.

I love the Major cards.

Steve,

You had mentioned about a bookshelf boxed set to be released later this year. Do you have an approximate release date for this set?

Thanks,

Trevor

Not readily to hand but I've seen actual versions of the box so it can't be far off, if it isn't already in the pipeline. I'll ask about it at tomorrow's meeting.

I was at Brookhurst Hobbies (in California) on August 25th for vacation and saw BOTH the std Risk 2210 box set AND the bookshelf format (Box about half size of risk box) with printed "disclaimer" on outside of box stating that it contains ALL the pieces of the full sized version).

So it HAS been released already. :D

I guess the GenCon promo cards do show up on eBay from time to time...

...although that's a BIT high priced for only 5 cards that have even been marked on.
