I have a question as whether this is legal or not.

I get the fieldworks card 2 times, can I stack 2 fieldworks on top of each other creating a defense of 4.

Or can I put fieldworks on both sides of the hex creating defense from almost all angels.

Whether it is legal or not i will still use it because it is more fun, but I was just wondering if the actual rules allow this.

You may place two forts on the same hex if you get two fortification cards. However, just as a fortification replaces the previous terrain in regards to battle dice reducers, so another fortification doesn't reduce battle dice by four, only by two. It can, however reduce battle dice on attacks from another direction

It would seem that you may only have one, if you pulled the card and attempted to use it on a hex with a field work, then the earlier field work would be removed and the new on placed on. That way it shows the unit abandon the previous position to build a new defense.

As for the idea of Fort, that would be something that should be part of the game in the set up. Good example would be the fortified positions at Cornith Mississippi.
