I used to think I knew the answer to this one, after an attacker fires, the defender chooses what units to put in casulties, but is this immediate? Example, lets say it's a naval battle and the attacker has 2subs and 1 destroyer/defender has 3 destroyers, 1 transport(very basic example and unrealistic, but I can't think right now) ;). attacker rolls for subs-1 hit, can the defender say "I'm going to wait and see if you get a hit with your destroyer, if not, I'll take a destroyer, If you hit, I'll take the transport"?

Can the defender or attacker wait for ALL the dice to be rolled before making their selection for casulties? thanks guys :)

If the attack roles, and gets a hit, the defender selects his casualties after all the attacking dice have been rolled for that combat sequence.(i think thats what they call it) So, in short, Yes. You can. And its a smart thing to do, too.

Actually NO.

in the 2nd & 3rd editions of the A&A game by milton bradley the defender selects the casualties after all the attacking units have fired.

in the Avalonhill A&A revised edtion (4th edition i guess) Subs attack in their own sequence.
--After ALL SUBS fire then casualties must be selected [removed if no opposing DD is present] ; this goes for both attacker & defender subs
--remaining Attacking forces fire
--defender selects casualties
--remaining Defending forces fire
--attacker selects casualties
