View Full Version : Request for programmers

While I appreciate all the hard work the programmers, such as Pagan, have put into developing the Mapview program, I have a request; I'm sure I'm not alone on the boards here in owning an iMac computer, and thus being completely unable to use the fine programs out there. I would like to issue a formal request that SOMEONE develop Mapview, or a similar program, for Macs, so people like myself are not constrained to one game at a time, and having to keep our board set up. I cannot do it, I don't know the first thing about computers or programming.
The creator of such a program would have the eternal gratitude of all wargamer-Mac-owners :D.

I am a programmer, however I didn't do anything to create MapView.
MapView is a great program, made by 1 guy I think, with the moniker name of MOT. Motcreations.com is of course his. I belive it was initially a part-time personal thing that spread out from there. It is still a part-time work in progress shareware.
macintosh usually have the ability to use software through the windows platform. I am going from memory here, but I believe it still runs under its own OS, but is able to funtion with windows as a 'running program'. MapView is a pretty simple program and should be able to run through the windows program.
Your chances of getting someone to actually make a program like MapView to run directly on a MAC is ZERO

I've often mulled over a rewrite of MapView in Java. Of course the key word there is "rewrite", as in from scratch and it might take a while. Some people have used MapView on a Mac via PC emulation software with varying degress of success, but such software is expensive I beleive ($100?).

Ok, sorry for not giving credit to the right guy, Mot; somewhere I got the idea Pagan had something to do with it :o.
Yeah, I know the chances are next to zero, but it's about my only hope; emulation software costs too much, and I've yet to find a PC program that will run on Macs. I'll try MapView, but I have no expectations.

I made the WalkThrough Guide kinda thing for using MapView with A&A.

No problem at all. Pagan has done a lot of work in assisting people in using MapView.
Actually, once I finish the UDM Compiler Guide based on DP's module creation guide, I had hoped to pick Pagan's brain on creating a MapView tutorial to post on the MotCreations website. (If he's interested)

Hey Mot,
Thanks for creating Mapview. It's an awesome program. Just wondering if you are planning any further updates like:
-auto-arrow feature
-auto-IPC counter
Thanks.

Of course MOT.
I'll read anything you want to make as a tutorial, and offer changes/suggestions. That would be very easy on my part even if you wanted me to make it myself.
I require nothing, and I would do it for free.

yes I would love to see a new release of mapview. with scrolling, extra arrows, and a way to zoom in or out.

Is there any timetable for a new Mapview module?

MapView 2.0 is in active development. I'll likely be posting a feature completion checklist on the MotCreations messageboard so people can follow along on the progress. I know everyone has been waiting a long time, but I hadn't had the kind of free time it takes to roll out a new version for a while (life happens). But progress is being made again and I'm excited about it. :)

Geez, how did I miss that question?
Which game module are you refering too? Or did you mean MapView itself?

Axis and Allies Revised is mostly what I use mapview for.
But I would think the scrolling and zooming is the mapview module itself.
The arrows would be the AAR module right? or udm etc.

And is this going to be Mac compatible...? :o
*quiet praying under breath* ;)

DP authoured the AAR module I believe so you'll have to ask him for changese there.
Scrolling and zooming are implemented the MapView executable itself, so I'll be addressing these in the new code. Scrolling certainly will be done, zooming is a "maybe".
Alas, no Mac support just yet. I need to get 2.0 out before I tackle something that big.
