Powers That Be:

Will the great game of 1830 ever be re-released or ever be sold to the Mayfair or Wizards of the Coast groups for reprinting? Copies of the original seem to be so scarce even Crazy Igor comes up shy (and willing to charge a pretty penny if he ever gets his hands on one.)

Additionally AH had put together a remarkable computer version of the game and the AI was terrific. However, as Microsoft changed operating systems, I'm not knowledegable enough to get it to work on Windows (was a DOS game). Has anyone else out there had any luck getting it to run?

Last, I know the Detroit area has a big 18xx following, are there any players in Western Ohio?

Hi Keven.

As far as I know, your microsoft computer is still using DOS as well as windows. When you shut down your computer, there are ussually the options: shut down, restart, or restart in DOS mode. You should be able to still run your old game.

Good Luck.

I just got this game to work on my new labtop with Windows XP. I just downloaded DOSBox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) and ran the game from that program. DOSBox will let you run most of your old DOS games on your Windows XP computer. If you have any questions about how to use DOSBox consult the readme file or ask here.

I had it running at one point on my computer. But when I moved, the game stopped working. I would go through the open animations and then it would start to bring up the start screen. At that point it would dump out and say that there wasn't enough conventional memory. It said that I needed to remove/free up TSRs? I was unable to change what I think was the right items so as to get it to work. I also had another old dos-based game that did the same thing at the same time. Yes, the AI was good.

1830 was (is) a very popular game and is still available on the second hand market. You can find a bunch of them on Ebay for instance.

As for the computer version, it is available for download (legally) on http://www.the-underdogs.org

I got it to work under XP no problem. Just rightclick on the executable, choose properties and under the Compatibility tab choose Windows 95. You also have to assign 4096kb of EMS memory under the Memory tab. After that you should be all set.

I tried anatar's suggestions and played with a lot of potential settings but nothing works. I keep getting "need 2700k expanded memory"
Anyone have ideas? I have a IBM T40 Laptop with win XP
