Can anyone help me? Adv. Civ is an MSDOS game that I've had for 7 years. Well my system is now running Windows XP. I can get to the Dos command prompt but when I try to start the game the program says it can't find the disk. I think it's because the disk is in the E drive, but the game is not programmed to look there.
What command need I enter at the C:\Avalon prompt to play the game with the disk in the E drive?
Thanks
Chris

I can remember some old DOS utilities that would let you trick the game into thinking the CD was located at another drive, but I can't for the life of me remember any of their names.

However, check out DOSbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) which is a DOS emulator. It has a built in command [Mount] which will let you remap drives to the "D" drive.
I admit, downloading this to make just one game work may be quite a bit of work, but if you have just one more old DOS game you'd like to get up and running, I strongly advise you spend an hour or two to learn how to make DOSbox work. It has saved me a lot of trouble and frustration, and there's hardly a game I can't run even on my old rusty Win2000 box. smile.gif

And if you get it to work, how about a PBEM some time? - i never did get around to playing PBEM back when AdvCiv was released.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the DosBox site and downloaded the Windows version, but I see no instructions on how to get it to work. Once it's loaded on my system, what do I do?
I'd love to PBEM but I've got to get it to work first! I see on the DosBox site that Advanced Civilization is supported, whatever that means.
Thanks again for any help.
Chris

subst is a dos command that will trick your pc into thinking the cd is located on another drive.

though im not sure you can run your dos games on XP.

Hi there,

Seems like a lot of people have problems running old DOS games under Win XP. I've got both 1830 and Adv. Civ running on my XP machine without the need for an emulator. The trick is to rightclick on the executable and chose properties. Then select "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95" and it should work like a charm.

One bit of advice though, don't try to get the sound to work, it rarely ever does since the way the soundcard is addressed in XP is way different from the good old DOS days.

Does anyone know where or how I can get a copy of the old Civ Game?
