I have the '96/7 cd edition of Third Reich, and I am unable to install it on my new Windows XP platform. I've tried installing from DOS, but I can't get a 3rv.bat file to start the game. It worked on my old Windows '95 machine. Help!

I don't get any message. What happens is that I seem to be able to install all but the 3rv.bat file, so that everything is there in a master 3R file on my hard drive, but nothing will open the game, even though the disk is in the D drive, and I'm ready to go. I've tried installing it according to the original directions for Windows '95, with the add/delete feature, and even by going into MS-DOS mode, but with no luck. I played it on my former Windows '98 machine, but when it suffered a fatal crash, it took all the passengers down with the ship. Alas, since there is something really great about playing a day's worth of 3R, versus the minute-by-minute grind of Hearts of Iron.

This is a little program that allows most dos based games to work on WinXP. You will have to read around to figure out how to use it, but it is worth it to get all those great old games to work with WinXP....with sound.

I did not have much luck in XP, or using DOS Box. My best results were creating a bootable CD using Win98, and running 3R from there. However, this option will not work for those running XP with a hard drive formatted using NTFS.
I've read others who have used Partition Magic (or similar tools) to partition a few gigs of space on their hard drive for those old DOS games that refuse to run in 2000/XP. It'll cost you a few extra bucks, but may be worth it if no other solution works for you.
I'd be glad to help wherever I can if all of this is Greek to anyone reading this post. I've been doing this WAY too long. :)

OK. Well, here is a link to a downloadable copy of Third Reich. I tried it and it works with XP, well for me anyway. No CD needed.

I never tried TR with DOSBox, because of this working version. However, with a few of my old favorites (5th Fleet, The Lost Admiral, The Grandest Fleet, etc) DOSbox is the only way to go.

If you can read quickly enough, the message is "Unable to locate CD"
Sadly the-Underdogs version is not 1.38 [as stated] (but 1.37 ?) so if you conquer France and then capture London the US is NOT a supply source.

Yes, but the "them" is Microsoft not AH as the game worked all the way through WinMe. Their program compatability feature seems to do nothing.
