It seems Hasbro's license for CE ends in September and the original designers are shopping around for a new publisher. Apparently, Steve Jackson Games is the current forerunner...

Sounds promising.

That's about the extent of what's been said right now: only that they're "in talks." SJG would definitely support the game with expansions, but the component quality would be nowhere near AH's version.

I read an interview with the game owners today. They are still hoping to land CE with an established publisher who will release expansions and cross-market CE online.

It was disappointed to read that they had a game plan to help WotC market CE to Magic fans, but WotC wanted nothing to do with it.

Anyway, it sounds like there are good things happening with CE online.

Hi all.

WotC has not much motive to market anything specifically to magic players except more magic.

Steve Jackson Games could potentially do a wonderfull job with Cosmic Encounter, this is good news. If the game does well enough, I could see not only expansions, but higher quality components released and sold separately (like the life counters and miniatures they sell for Munchkin).

I really like CE, but the gamers I play with are not into it for some reason. Perhaps A new version with more expansions (than my AH game) could stir some interest...

I would have loved to see AH do expansions, but oh well. But please not SJG! We'll probably pay $50 and have to cut the counters out ourselves. My hope is that Fantasy Flight Games gets it. I'm sure they would do a great production and probably give it plenty of support. However, I have no idea if they are even in the running. Anyone know a place to find news on current CE developments?

The game designers are running a CE website now for online play. Based on some of their comments, I think they like CE as a video game better than a board game.

Any news from the front?

It sounds like Funagain Games (of all people) is in the running to reprint CE...

I honestly think, in hindsight, that AH had no intention of producing expansions.

I recall my very first thought when I opened up my copy of AH's CE:

"How will the Mothership hold pieces for players in a 6-player game?"

When the centerpiece is specifically designed without one of the most common expansions in mind, that should have set off alarms in my head right away.

Actually, there are quite a few hints that AH had originally planned on a 5-6 player expansion. If you do a little digging, you might even come across box cover art for it. You can even see how the board was already designed to include 6 players. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/59703

Was there going to be an attachment for the Mothership? Kinda like a dental bridge? :D

There are those tabs on the end, that something could possible attach to. Or they could just go ahead and design a bigger mothership to throw in the with the expansion. I'm quite positive that something as minor as not having a mothership designed for six players is not the sole reason the CE expansion never got released by AH...

No, but it did make me wary about AH's committment level to producing any expansions.

It's been sitting in the same spot in my cabinet since the day I bought it. I get much more mileage out of the Mayfair Games edition, which I also own.
