I never got around to trying the old AH's efforts at area wargames - Storm Over Arnhem, Breakout Normandy, Turning Point Stalingrad, Thunder at Cassino - If anyone's played these, would the maps be good for use with the minifigs from the AA games?

I don't know that there would be a problem (except perhaps with Thunder At Cassino, which has an inset with a different scale from the main map), but you'd have quite a bit of work to do to come up with rules that would work. All of these games have victory conditions that are heavily based on the fact that you can only activate one group before your opponent gets to react. The spaces themselves would be adequate for figures, though.

Yes, indeed, I was thinking it would make getting some copies of these old games off Ebay doubly worthwhile - On one hand to play the game as it was intended probably still with the counters, and then make a simpler game using the figs.

Interesting idea. There's no reason at all why it wouldn't work, provided you stick with it and develop the new rules.

Off the top of my head, I think you could use A&A as a basis for combat. Then you'd need to work out starting OBs, reinforcement and replacement schedules (replacements, in particular, would be crucial given the high attrition of A&A), and victory conditions.

Could be fun. Keep us posted. If it works out well, it could make a spiffy article for the website.

Thunder at Cassino and Breakout: Normandy are on the way, and am likely to win Storm Over Arnhem. As soon as I receive them, I will studiously begin the initial phase of research - playing them!! lol.

The only one I haven't caught is Turning Point: Stalingrad.

Monty's Gamble: Market Garden is a new area movement type game being developed by Multiman Publishing. It just reached it's pre-order number so they'll be manufacturing shortly. Check out their site at http://www.multimanpublishing.com.

I've got copies now of SOA, TAC, and BKN, although I haven't had time for the important research of playing them yet! One idea that struck me in looking them over is for the minifig version making specific AA-like battleboards for each game and making them specific to the units.. In otherwords if in one of the games, German infantry units have a three attack strength and Allied infantry units only 2, then German infantry would be rolling to hit on 1 higher space on the battle board.
