#1. Hannibal without a doubt. He fought the world's largest army on their home turf for 16 years.

#2. Alexander the Great - Most likely could have conqured the world if his army had been up to the task.

I think you are horribly mistaken almost all the major leaders of the civil war (with exceptions) were terrible. They were indecisive and did not understand how to fight with the new tactics.

Civil War - I'd go with jackson. Lee was a good general aside from his two mistakes (one being gettysburg).

Lee was an excellent general. Yamoto was also a genius. Rommel was also excellent. Eisenhower was a good general. Patton is incredibly ovverrated.

Garibaldi! I like a lot other generals, but Garibaldi defeated several big armies of the foreign Empires with only a thousand of soldiers.

Actually I'm reading a very good book on patton. The thing you have to remember about him is that all he wanted to do was be a soldier. He is a very good tactical leader. He just hated politics and how it interfered in grand war strategies. From that standpoint he would have NEVER made a good operations general. Having him on the field however, is always a good idea.

We actually owe patton alot of credit. He was one of the two supporters of tank warfare after WWI while the rest of the US army felt like it was a dumb waste of resources.

Thats an interesting point about evrone not wanting tanks. Thats actually why they're called tanks. Because on the bill for the parts the british government put "water tanks" to keep it a secret.
