So my wife got a Sony MP3 player for her birthday. I can't get files to copy from my WindowsMediaPlayer to transfer into it. I can get files to copy directly from the original CD :) but not from my PC  . The instructions that come with it are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Can anyone tell me how to do this.

Simplton level instructions please. :D

What style player is it? More specific than "Sony"... is there a model?

It is a Sony Psyc 512mb. It came with the SonicStage software.

When you plug it into the computer, does the computer detect it? Click on my computer and see if anything is there. You may be able to try dragging and dropping the music files...

Allright Lt. here's how I read it on Sony's website.

1. Open up SonicStage.
2. Place your mouse pointer over "Music Source" (or "Import a CD"). This will drop-down a menu to either "Import a CD" or "Import Music Files". You may need to click the down-arrow.
3. Select "Import Music Files".
4. Browse your drive, and select the file(s) you want to import.
5. Click import.
6. Connect your Psyc to it's USB cable, and the USB cable to your PC.
7. Move the pointer over "Transfer" (may have to click down-arrow), and select ATRAC Audio Device.
8. Select an audio file or album you wish to transfer and click -> to start transferring.

I found this on Sony's website but it took some searching. Here's the link:

Hope that does it for you! If not, let me know. I'll poke around the web some more.

I can get it to try to transfer files over BUT then it says it can't due to copyright restrictions(?) but it WILL copy them straight from the CD. It doesn't seem to make sense.

Also why won't my Windows Media Player Sync function work on it? Isn't that what it's for.

You may be running up against some of MS's/Sony's good 'ol DCMA (Digital Copyright Millenium Act) protection. Basically, your MP3's/WMA's have a copyright attached to them that Sony/SonicStage is picking up. Since the collective thought on this subject by the music companies is that you are a thieving b@$+ard if you try to rip your own MP3's of music you paid for MS and Sony are trying to make life difficult for you.

In regards to the Windows Media Player sync feature, I would wager that the Sony player simply won't work with it. Sony is peculiar in that they use their own (proprietary = bad) ATRAC format for their "MP3" players. That means their software has to convert a standard MP3/WMA file to the Sony ATRAC format for use on the player. If SonicStage won't let you convert "copyrighted" MP3's/WMA's, I doubt there's much you can do to force the issue.

I would suggest one of three solutions:

1. Stop trying to steal copyright material you thieving b@$+ard (the music companys' collective response - not mine).
2. Un-install and re-install Windows Media Player. After install, when prompted for the player options, UNCHECK any options related to copyrights/protection. Then go through and rip all your albums to MP3/WMA again so the songs do not contain the copyright signatures.
3. Return the Sony "MP3" player for one that will work with Windows Media Player.

Sorry I don't have better news for your chief. If there are any tools out there to strip the copyright signatures out of the files, I'll send them your way.

Well I can't take it back, it is already opened and it was a gift.
Since we can copy from CDs directly into SonicStage it is still workable albeit slow.
(The downloads that I purchased from Walmart online is blocked as well  , and it was purchased legally. However I can burn them onto a disc and then transfer them into SonicStage without a problem, so go figure....)

Oof, unfortunately you may have to take the same, burn and turn approach with all your MP3/WMA files (i.e. burn CD, convert to ATRAC format). I noticed one other possible solution...if you can convert your MP3/WMA files to WAV format, you should be able to convert them from WAV to ATRAC without the copyright junk, since WAV files intrinsically don't have the copyright tags. This would save you the hassle of burning to CD. I'd recommend killing the WAVs once you did a batch because they're pretty massive and will suck up your hard drive space like it's going out of style.

Just to be clear...

I am not suggesting you visit any hacker websites. I am also not suggesting you search for utilities to remove copyright protection on your audio files. Furthermore, I am not suggesting you download any such utilities or use them to remove copyright protection on your audio files. I'd like to help, but I can't. ;)

Wish I could offer more help, but I'm more one of those "gotta be there to work with it" guys...

No problem. We managed to get plenty of songs onto her player, it was just slower than it should have been.
