I started reading the rules and found myself slightly confused by the combat sequence as given on p.15 in the rulebook  . Here is my problem:
If a battle continues for more than one "round", what steps in the combat sequence are repeated? (4-7? (until 8 or retreat)) Which leads to:
Is the "conduct opening fire" step re-taken so that submarines can fire again with its first strike against remaining ships or is that just at the very start of the battle? (and if it is just taken at the start, can submarines fire in subsequent "rounds" in the battle and how are those attacks then treated, or is the only real option for subs to submerge after the first round? (or alternatively, be kept as canon fodder?))
Thank you in advance and for a great game.

Subs fire in subsequent rounds and they still have first strike so the casualties can't return fire (unless there's a destroyer present)

That was what I thought but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks :)
So basically steps 2-7 until 8 or retreat then. Thanks again, cheerio!

Pg. 16 in the Operations Manual (OM) gives you the Step 7: Press Attack or Retreat section which includes the following paragraph:
"As long as combat continues, repeat steps 2-6. (Units previously returned to the game board can not reenter combat.) Each such set of steps constitutes one cycle of combat."
The Larry Harris Tournament Rules (LHTR) clarify this section with the following:
"As long as combat continues, and subs are present and have not submerged, repeat steps 2-6 (only subs will be able to fire in step 2 - all other opening round fire capabilities are for one round of fire only). If no subs are present, repeat steps 4-6. Each such set of steps constitutes one cycle of combat."
A copy of the LHTR can be obtained at these links:

the first site also has the explanation as to what things were change from the OM to the LHTR and why. It also has the FAQ sheets that have been modified to correspond the changes that are in the LHTR.
