Wow, this was so bad at first I thought it could only be a parody (but it's the real thing):

The Red Crescent is a major symbol of Islam. The Red Cross functions as the Red Crescent in Muslim areas (Google 'red crescent' for yourself). That makes this much like using a swastika to pay tribute to holocaust victims and then passing it off as a simple geometric design.
Here's a link for letters to the editors. Tell the city what you think.

maybe i'm missing the point, but what is the parallel between the red crescent and the swastika? And are you saying that the red crescent is the red cross of the muslim areas? So what is the problem, that the memorial in that article is in the shape of a crescent? Please clarify. thanks

because there are more than one symbolic meanings for a crescent..granted the palestinians have it on their flag, the ''swastika'' shape was actually first a native american symbol before hitler took it and ruined it. If the crescent is just a coincidence, then sure, they could have researched it better, but are you implying that they know or mean to put a muslim symbol in the memorial?

The swastika it's not a native american simbol, it's universal. It has prehistoric roots(or maybe is even an archetipal image). You can find it in every culture, from the ancient etrurians ruins in tuscany to induist temples in India.

I am not sure I would say that, but if the Red Cross uses the Cross because of taking a Christian approach to aid, then switching to use the crescent is the wrong thing to do.
If they are not claiming a Christian approach and it is just being used as an easily recognizable symbol then I see nothing wrong with the change.

I must gently remind everyone to not let this thread veer off into politics or religion. :)
