Has anyone played the mod where subs can choose to be submerged but to surface, they need one movement point. Submerging takes one movement point too. This seems to better mimick the way subs move/attack.. ie they actually stay submerged most times.

In the AA rule, it seems they are surfaced at end of players' round therefore exposing them to air attacks. I would thot if they are allow to choose whether to surface or submerge at end of their turn, they'll be more valuable.

Obviously when in destroyer space, they have to surface.. ie they cannot hide from destroyers.

they also need to surface before they can make an attack (using up one movement point)

Are you suggesting a House Rule? You now we have a whole forum filled with modifications. Some good, some bad...

Many people make the mistake of assuming that WWII submarines acted the same way that modern ones do. In fact, they had to run on diesel engines most of the time, as their batteries could only run them for fairly short amounts of time before being recharged. Because of this, they spent most of their time on the surface, submerging only to attack or evade attacks on them. This is what made them vulnerable to air spotting and attack, especially after longer-ranged aircraft were developed and the middle of the Atlantic was no longer a safe haven.

The "Super Submarines" tech represents the German breakthrough near the end of the war that allowed subs to run submerged on diesels using a snorkel to take in fresh air and vent exhaust. Had that technology been introduced sooner, the Allies would have had a much harder time detecting and evading German subs.

Ah... Krieghund your explanation makes sense. Now I learned something new about WW2 subs <grin>. Yes I did make the mistake of thinking they can submerged much like modern day subs.

If this the case, there's no need to consider this "rule" since it makes the game even more unrealistic.

Cheers for the info!
