Why cant you fire from a jeep? All this makes the jeep for is a faster transport.
Rat Patrol?

Because the devs don't want you to. :)

Also because a Jeep truly was not a great firing platform for small arms and definitely not for a Mortar or MG. The space just wasn't there. A halftrack on the other hand was a little more useful in that mode.

And Rat Patrol was a customized jeep with an MG mount on it. That's a little different than just loading and unloading to a transport and being able to fire. Maybe down the road we'll see specialty vehicles like this.

If I recall correctly, these jeeps were used as scout vehicles in North Africa. I'd love to see these in the game - they practically scream for the "Strike and Fade" ability. Hopefully they'll be in the North Africa expansion with a North Africa paint scheme with the .50 cal mounts.

The SAS used modified Jeeps for airfield raids in north africa.

it would be great to see tricked out SAS jeeps in a future expansion...and 3/4 ton LRDG trucks as well...I do hope the second expansion is North Africa oriented...

So based on this thread quite a few of you might be saying to yourself, "So what good is a Jeep?"
Obviously, the transport ability on the Jeep provides you with a mechanism to get slow moving troops up to a position more desireable or more strategically important. I think this much everyone can agree is an appropriate use for a Jeep.
Here's another use that you may not have considered. Since this game has a Stacking Limit (p.31 AAM Rulebook: "Each hex can contain up to two units of each army. Only one of those four units can be a vehicle."),...you can use the Jeep as a very inexpensive, very disposable, blocker.
After you have successfully transported your troop to the front line, or the positions where you want them, send the Jeep back to a position of strategic importance and use it to prevent your opponent from moving a vehicle into any specific hex.
Used properly, this tactic can give you at least a 1 turn delay from an advancing Armored Vehicle.
