Battle for Saipan: Tanapag Plain, 6 July 1944

The Fifth Amphibious Corps had been in almost continuous action since the initial landings on Saipan on 15 June. Losses had been high among the troops of the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions and the 27th Infantry Division, but the end was in sight. Japanese forces estimated at 5,000 to 7,000 men, supported by a battalion of 77mm guns and perhaps 20 tanks, were penned in the northern end of the island.

Tanapag Plain, more than a mile wide, was assigned to the 27th Division. Along with the considerable open ground, a coastal road ran along the left flank of the division toward the northern end of the island. This was paralleled by a narrow-guage railroad, single tracked, which served a sugar plantation. A coconut grove was scattered across the plain, leading up to a series of small hills on the right. These hills, and the northern fringe of the coconut grove, were occupied by the Japanese.

2nd and 3rd Battalions, 105th Infantry, supported by a platoon of light tanks, were given the task of clearing the grove and forcing the Japanese from the hills beyond. Only after these objectives were taken could the main effort to secure the northern part of Saipan begin.

Map Configuration 2: Knife Fight
(South is toward the bottom of the picture)

Objectives:
--Southernmost woods/road hex on Dog-2
--Northernmost town hex on Charlie-1

Victory Conditions: Either player wins if in sole possession of both objective hexes (no enemy units adjacent) at the end of any turn beginning turn seven. Otherwise, game ends at the conclusion of turn ten with victory determined by point value of enemy units destroyed.

Axis Forces (95 points):
--47mm Type I AT Gun (x2)
--Arisaka Rifle (x5)
--Imperial Sergeant (x2)
--Type 89 Mortar (x3)
--Type 92 MG (x3)
Set up first anywhere on Dog-2/Charlie-1 (north end)

Allied Forces (100 points):
--Vickers MG (x2)
--M3 Stuart (x2)
--M1 Garand Rifle (x7)
--Mortar M2 (x2)
--“Red Devil” Captain (x2)
Set up second within 5 hexes of edge of Baker-2/Able-2 (south end)

Played this on Tuesday, it was quite fun! I chose Allies; my opponent and I placed a vertical barrier on the battlefield between us for a 'true' hidden setup.

First observations when we removed the barrier: the Allied player has to contend with a stream that runs almost the entire length of the deployment zone. Thus the two Stuarts should deploy in front of the stream, to avoid getting stuck behind the action.

Second observation: Mortars own this map! Maybe it was just how the Japanese player and I deployed, but we started shelling the hell out of each other by turn 1. Very bloody, but quite fun.

Third observation: Stuarts eat infantry for dinner. That little tank is a beast when it has no AT to fear.

The way the battle played out, I was able to send a flanking force of 4x Garand up the western side to take the woods hexes. The two strips of forest in the Japanese territory turned into a meat grinder...but the Japanese player couldn't maneuver his AT guns to get a decent shot, and my 2x Stuarts walked all over his infantry. Highlight of the game came on the last turn, when 2x Arisakas banzai-charged a Stuart and destroyed it. Allies pulled off the victory, and we both agreed the Axis player deployed poorly.

Recommendations: Find a way to include a Ha-Go for the Japanese and a Flamethrower for the Americans. Both units are too kewl to be left out, and the scenario could accomodate them without much trouble. Thanks Vulturedoodle!

Awesome game, It was Wensday Patrick, not tuesday :)

I think it might have been a different game if you had not destroyed two of my mortars the first turn. That was a serious blow. By keeping my closests units disrupted I was unable to banzai charge sooner. Once your uniits passed all the LOS obstacles I was screwed....no chance.

I would recommend the Japanese player deploy BEHIND the rows of woods. Stay out of sight and attempt to banzai charge the hell out of the enemy....12 dice is insane :)

Hadn't realized anyone had played this. I'm glad you enjoyed it; thanks for the comments. When I was originally playtesting it, I had two Shermans on the US side (instead of the Stuarts), and they seemed too tough for the Japanese to deal with, especially standing off and simply pounding anything that showed its face.

I also, as the Japanese player, tended to place my AT guns back at the very corner of the map in positions to support each other, and everything else as far back as reasonable (as henrym203 suggests). Hidden Japanese setup would make this play very, very well, I think.

Steve,

Will you update your scenarios with Set 2 units? I'm curious to know what new Japanese pieces will end up in this scenario.
