Someone requested that I show the difference between the FoW tiger and panther and the same tanks by AAM. Here are the pics:

WOW thank you!!!!!!
The A&AM tiger tank looks like a sherman compared to the FOW Tiger tank

Now I'm going to check out FOW.

Does anyone know how Quality Casting's armored vehicles compare sizewise?

The old Command Decision 15mm figures dwarf the A&A minis by about the same amount as FOW figures. I measured a Panzer IV and figured out the scale...about 1/144.

Let it also be known that the FoW are peuter and VERY heavy. I'm giong to stick with AAM because of simplicity and weight of product! ;)

Not entirely. Only the tracks and the gun barrel is pewter. The body of the tank and the turret are resin.

True, but those tracks make it very heavy. :)

Thanks mecra!
Could you do a nose to tail shot of the tanks lined up? I'd like to compare the side details.
This only reminds me of my lament of how AH missed a golden opportunity to horn into the metal mini's market by not matching scales.
On the other hand, that little bit (.13?) of extra plastic probably would have increased production costs noticeably.

You'll note that the FoW tanks in the picture are also considerably larger than the AAM map hexes. That would also be an increase in production costs because larger maps would be needed to accomodate them if WotC had gone for the larger scale. The FoW M4A1 Shermans I have are also slightly too big for the AAM hexes (they extend out about a quarter-inch).

Good point. I wonder...
There's an interesting exchange in the chat transcript in which one of our members asked why the designers decided to use 1/120th (or something) rather than go with the more common 1/107th (or something) scale. IIRC, the response was along the lines of "you don't think 15mm is a common scale for WWII?" Leading me to conclude that the size of the minis is considered true 15mm by the creators.

I bought a FOW Sd 251 halftrack Friday to build just for the heck of it. It's very detailed - it even comes with 4 soldiers (3 sitting and a group and one standing). It's about 20% larger than the one in A&AM.

Yeah, I'll be sticking with AAM b/c they are a durable plastic and lightweight. Being invested in DDM as well, smaller size and ease of storage are important to me.

I'd love to get into Flames of War, but the time of building/painting my army and then playing is too much for a guy with a job and a family and a lot of other games I like too. Since the main thing I want is to PLAY, AAM let's me do that with a game that's fun and actually better on the realism than my pessimistic mind was expecting.

I have a 1/144 Sturm Tiger and that's smaller then the A&A mini Tiger.
15mm x 1/120= 1.8m, or 5.9'
15mm x 1/100= 1.5m, or 4.92'
I think A&A's 1/120 is a 'truer' 15mm scale then 1/100 or similar scale.
Also the smaller A&A minis are easier to package in the boosters.

Well, I just finished painting four FoW Shermans, and all four took me about 30-40 minutes. The infantry will be a royal pain, but that's why I'm going to field a Tank Company. :D
On the other hand, though, a game of FoW certainly will take longer than the 20 or so minutes that it takes for me to play a game of AAM.

I got myself bogged down in painting up my FOW army - probably have $200 worth of stuff. I never really broke out and played because I just did not want to spend precious gametime (I play lots of types of games) just to field my FOW army. I enjoy the aspect of being able to play IMMEDIATELY what I purchased. I really enjoy the AAM game thus far.

How long does it take to field an army?

The infantry are 15mm but the tanks are nearer 10mm. Personally since the infantry are not 1:1 this doesnt bug me (even for a game like FOW where you measure rather than count)
