I dont know if this topic has come up before but is being in the same hex also being adjacent and will effects of rules for adjacent hexes apply in this case. Specifically I want to know about defensive fire, ie, when a unit moves into/out of the hex with the enemy, does he encourage defensive fire...

page 29 of the rule book. Glossary, adjacent: One hex away or in the same hex. The answer to your question is yes.

Per the rules (p.21):

Provoking Defensive Fire
A unit provokes defensive fire when it moves from one hex adjacent to an enemy unit into another hex adjacent to that same enemy unit. The hex a unit is in counts as adjacent to that unit.

The glossary also has:

adjacent: One hex away or in the same hex.

Hope that helps.
