A couple of guys and myself have set to making a conversion of A&A minis using real 3D terrain converting vehicles movement in to centimeters. It plays just as smoothly as a hex grid map, but looks way cooler. I'm working on a little compass type thingy to help establsh vehicle facing. Gonna post the conversion stuff after a few more playtest rounds.

my gaming group tried it last week...with some excellent 15mm diroramas made by a guy in Austrailia and purchased by my game shop...the only house rule to come up - was limiting close assaults on vehicles to 2 per turn...since you can move more than 2 inf. figures next to a tank gaming in that manner...

How do you handle defensive fire?

Days of Wonder games makes "Memoir '44", a neat and simple WWII game. The hexes on that game's map are the same size as the A&A Miniatures hexes. What's more, there's just been another map set (desert and snow surfaces) put out for it, as well as a box of very varied terrain features and buildings (power plants, trenches, dams, a prison camp, cityscape, etc.). You could use the A&A miniatures on the "Memoir" map, or use the "Memoir" terrain tiles on the A&A paper maps for some interesting scenarios with home rules for their effects. I wish I could take credit for this idea, but it came from a friend who works at my local game store. What do other people think of this?

good question...I do not beleave that question came up during play...hmmm...not sure if anyone wanted to use defensive fire that day?...

good point...that needs some attention...

Yep, I happened to stop by the FLGS at lunch and they had said Terrain Tile sets and the maps there. I'm gonna pick up both next week. They look very good. Not quite sure how I'll use them yet, but I'll think of something.

It works great... though we ran into some sticky situations but I liked it very much.

I went to their wab site and they indicate that they are not available yet?You found them in your FLGS i will have to look into my FLGS ability to get them.Thanks.

This subject keeps popping up - I figure the general satisfaction for the game is steering people away from too much experimentation!

I love the idea of "measured" rules - For those who have done it, I am curuious how you deal with a few of the rules:

1) Defensive fire (as noted above - I think this is particularly tricky)
2) Range/movement - what works best? I was thinking that while playing with 15mm models it might work best to double the figures, in inches
3) Facing - I think a template could easily be created to sort this out in a jiffy.
4) Stacking Limits - Hmmmm. Not sure about this

As you might guess, I haven't played this game a lot yet, but I have made a nice big 4X4 surface to play it on. My quandry now is, do I create rules to play with a tape measure, or do I figure out a way to mark the hexes on the surface?

The game looks SO much nicer with scale terrain.....

yup. #4 was a big problem. We just did a radius thing. It is hard to explane. But I like the traditional board much more. Except I am making a board with 4'' hexs I don't like the 2'' hexs.

Mem 44 compatibility and no hex map were some of my reasons to jump in. I already got the game and the 2 new extra pack and new map, they work great and are WAYYYYY better than AAM maps. AAM should release a sturdy sets of maps and sell them for 10-20$ a pack, it would work fine. I also got a lot of 15mm terrain and i like the no hex option...

For stacking limits and defensive fire, I too was considering a "radius thing," like another template maybe. Seems complicated, and I'm worried it might bog down the rules...

I'm leaning toward hexes, so I can play with people who already know the rules.

Stojakovic - I agree that 2" is small, but what size is your board? I have settled on 3" as it fits exactly on a 4 foot surface.

I am still making my board out of cheap pine wood. I am making the hexs seperatly and some bunched up together. they will be able to conect with each other by usinf wooden dowls or magnets... I have not decided what I am going to use..... so my board will be 3-D I hope to get it done before summer

Food for thought:

With a 4x4 surface you can put 16 hexes square on a board. If you mark them right on the surface, you can then make hex terrain tiles to lay on top of the board.

My project (if work ever gets out of the way) will be to recreate the the terrain on the published maps, so you could play the scenarios released. You can "bunch them together" like multiple hex hills and towns.

I plan to put small 15mm buildings on the town tiles, which will reduce the "size" of the towns, but will make them look a little more realistic.

I am also going to do road, river and marsh tiles.

I just can't figure out a very precise way to mark the hexes - any suggestions? I've experimented a little with a tracing template, but fear it's not a great way...

there is a software progrm that you are able to build your own maps with towns lakes rivers and all that other good stuff and you can change the hex size it is 40 bones but I say it is worth it... I hope saint nick thinks I was on his nice list

For Defensive fire we settled on a 5cm radius for each unit

I've been using the Memoir 44 idea for a week now. They work great and you can really customize the map. Plus Memoir 44 is a great little game.

Lost Battalion games makes what looks like great tile set - 3 inches - at a great value

I laminated my maps with heavy gauge laminant and than custom made 3D terrain for the maps. Looks fantastic and works great with existing rule set. Although i have added more complexity to our games just because i have wargamed for 27 years now and crave a little more depth. you can see my teerain and how I made it here on these boards.

However I do like many of your ideas and just as a suggestion the rule set for Ogre may solve a lot of your questions on how to accomplish certain issues. It was originally a hex game and was also converted to a tape game.
