View Full Version : Defensive fire on retreat?

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere or if the answer turns out to be more obvious than i expected. I continue to have one nagging question regarding defensive fire. For the most part i understand it's trigger, it's use and it's effects, however, i can't seem to find and answer or settle this myself or in my group.

Do enemy units risk defensive fire when making a "retreat"?

For example: My SSP moves into the hex directly to the front of an enemy Sherman on my movement phase (this applies no matter who moves first due to initiative). On my opponents turn he decides to "retreat" by backing directly out of his original hex and into the hex behind him and then continue to move away. For simplicity let's assume all hexes are open so that terrain movement roles are not a factor.

I realize that the Sherman is moving from an adjacent hex to a non-adjacent hex and therefore there should be no defensive fire, as i understand it. But in the spirit of the game, shouldn't my SSP get to fire at an enemy that is attempting to break contact?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you stated, there is no defensive fire in this situation. Remember that "in the spirit of the game," all of that activity is happening simultaneously. In effect, the Sherman pulls out when it sees the Panther coming, not after the Panther parks 100 yards away. Typically, the only time you get withdrawal defensive fire is if a tank or soldier tries to leave a hex that contains enemy infantry.
