Wiking at Kovel 1944

In March 1944 elements of Army Group Centre
retreated to Kovel, an important railway centre.
Declared a 'Fester Platz' (fortified place) by
Hitler, he decreed there were would be no
surrender or retreat for the garrison of 9000.

Hot in pursuit, the Russians cut most of the rail lines
which were patrolled by 'Panzerzugs' , or German
armoured trains. Heavily armoured BR57 engines
pushed the gun and flak cars, driving off countless
Russian assaults. Finally, the last Panzerzug defending
the Chelm-Kovel line was damaged, and the Germans
in Kovel were trapped.

A relief effort was launched by General Gille of
SS Wiking and numerous Panthers were brought
up the railhead to finally relieve the city. Only 2000
Germans escaped the battles that raged around Kovel.

Special Units
To represent the Armoured Train I'll give suggested
stats for the main gun car (Panzer 3). Atlas N scale track can
be used to run from the map edge to the town.
Also Dragon Can.do 1/144 has rail and appropriate rail cars that
work great for this scenario. The Panzer IIIF is available
at the beginning hex of the 'rail line' map edge. The relief Panther
starts at the map edge of the 'rail line' to Kovel on turn 2.

Maxim Machine-Gun
We've been using the points cost of 7
and the Type 92 model and stats for now, suggestions
for stats are welcome.

(Panzerzug)
Panzer IIIF
Avail: 1939
Spd: 4
Def: 4/3
Soft Att: 8/8/6
Hard Att: 9/8/6
Cost: 14

I've been thinking about a 'berserker' rule for the Russian troops
that is not 'too over the top'. Perhaps no command dependency?
Maybe no disrupt effect?

Most of the Russians in the Kovel assault were fired up with Vodka
and 'Samakhonka' a thick blueish 'drink' made from corn
and carbide.
OORAAHH! OORAAAHH! And the Russian charge begins...

Design notes: This is a historical battle based on the story of
a German survivor. He also fought in several engagements
near Kovel, and I can add scenarios for these additional
engagements.

I'll have pictures of our battle ( with the trains! ) in a few weeks.
Here's original photos of an Armoured Train which would have been
seen near Kovel.

The idea to use armoured trains is quite good. Congratullations. I just love Eastern front scenarios.
