Steve,
Your answer somewhat muddied the waters (pun intended). I guess the assumption is once you enter said hex on the road one can exit in any direction because the road in the hex could be "running" along the edge(s) (player’s choice) of the hex and not through the middle as often depicted in the graphics. Correct?

The point is that it doesn't matter where the road goes once you're in the hex. The rules don't differentiate between a unit that is "on" a road and one that is "off" a road if the unit is sitting in a hex. Roads only matter when a unit is moving. The rest of the time, you can ignore them. In a ridiculous, extreme example, a vehicle could enter a hex along a road, then drive a dozen figure 8s through the hex before exiting, again along the road, and it would still qualify for a road bonus.
You're correct that once you're in the hex, you can exit in any direction. You already got the road bonus for entering the hex. If you leave across a hexside that doesn't have a road, then you won't qualify for a road bonus, but not because you're leaving a hex off the road -- it's because you're entering the new hex off the road. You pay to enter hexes, not to leave them.
The exception to this is marsh, which vehicles can only enter and leave via roads. While you're sitting in the marsh hex, however, it's the same as being in clear terrain. The fact that it's marsh matters only when you're entering or exiting.
