View Full Version : Hex Facing...

Hi there,

The first 2 questions have probably been answered already, however:

Since enemies directly to the side of other units are not technically "in front" or "behind" the unit: 1. Can "Front firing only" or "Rear firing only" weapons target these enemies? I presume not, since such weapons usually had limited firing arcs, and the vehicle in question could have turned 30 degrees to face them, but I thought I should get clarification.

Do enemies in adjacent hexes target the Front or Rear vehicle defence?

Can adjacent/same hex enemies target the other arc, if they prefer?

Thanks very much for the clarifications,

Redgar

Before answering these questions, here's how facing works.

Look at the diagram below. Green hexsides (1, 2, 3) are your vehicle's front hexsides. Red hexsides (4, 5, 6) are your vehicle's rear hexsides.

If your LOS to a target crosses hexsides 1, 2, or 3, then that target is in your front firing arc.

If your LOS to a target crosses hexsides 4, 5, or 6, then that target is in your rear arc. If your vehicle has a restricted firing arc (Jagdpanzer, sIG33, or M3 Lee, for example), then you can't shoot at it.

If your LOS crosses the spine exactly between hexsides 3 and 6 or hexsides 1 and 4, then that target is in neither your forward nor rear arc. If you have a restricted firing arc, you can't shoot at it. This applies whether you are restricted to a forward arc or a rear arc.

If the situation is reversed and you're the target, you figure it out the same way. If the LOS from the attacker to your vehicle crosses a green hexside (1, 2, or 3), then the shot is against your front defense. If the LOS from the attacker to your vehicle crosses a red hexside or hex spine (4, 5, or 6), then the shot is against your rear defense.

If the attacker is in the same hex as you, then the shot is always against your rear defense.

Now, to answer your specific questions --

1. I interpret "enemies directly to the side of other units" to be those that lie along the spine of hexes where the LOS crosses between hexsides 3 and 6 or hexsides 4 and 1. As noted above, those targets are outside your vehicle's firing arc, and they are shooting at your vehicle's rear defense.

2. Enemies in adjacent hexes but not in the same hex as your vehicle target the front defense if they're in hexes 1, 2, or 3, or the rear defense if they're in hexes 4, 5, or 6.

3. Enemies in the same hex always target the rear defense. Enemies in adjacent hexes, but not the same hex, target whichever defense they're facing, as noted in answer 2.
