does a vehicle always have to face a forest hex when it tries to enter it? Why couldn't you change facing before trying to enter it, face away and then if you failed the roll have your back end twoards the trees?

Because there's a rule on page 14 that states,
If something stops a Vehicle's movement, such as a failed terrain movement roll, the Vehicle ends its movement facing the hex it tried to enter.
AAM doesn't delve into complicating details such as whether a vehicle is moving forward or backward. It just assumes that tanks always drive forward.
