View Full Version : "Corrected" Hellcat

I read in a thread (by a staffmember) somewhere in this Board that the scale of the Hellcat was corrected. Has anyone seen/bought one of these smaller Hellcats, or have any information about them?

:) This question made the rounds some time ago (six or eight weeks?). No one then had seen one, I haven't seen one, nor heard of one. I strongly suspect none have, in fact, been produced. My intuition tells me it's more of a wishful thinking, coulda, woulda, shoulda sort of thing. Still, I retain hope we might see a re-release or update in some future set.

Although I hate to spread hearsay, I heard from one of the mods that WOTC did recognize its scale error and there are plans to release a proper sculpt, as well as a possible mail-away swap arrangement, where you can trade in your big Hellcat for a smaller one. Again, nothing official, just more rumors to feed the fire.

This is the thread which has a response from an AH R&D staff:

It sounded like only initial batch of M18 was oversized, and later ones are correct. However, I've yet to hear any one who got a correctly sized M18. So maybe the next time when they reprint set 1? I don't necessary mean after they officially retired set 1 and then reprint, but when set 1 in the market is sold out and AH decided to make more.
Since set 2 is coming out, I bet all of their resource has gone into manufacturing set 2 at the moment...

We recently re-ordered about 4 cases at my store, and they all had the mutant over-sized Hellcats.
I personally won't play with it until I get a properly sized Hellcat, so let's hope WOTC get's to it! :(

Correction: YOU never received a "final status/clarification" that satisified YOU.
WotC has specifically stated that the molds for the model have been corrected and that later productions of the model would be correctly scaled. There simply hasn't been another production run, yet.

Yes, because AAM is a simple boardgame where scale is not the most important factor. Would you refuse to play Monopoly because one of the pieces was a little too large?

Whoa, what was said that we won't play with the Hellcat specifically, we're still playing the game.
And I refuse to play with the shoe for personal reasons.

I agree with not playing the hellcat fig. "Why you say", I am paying for products to be produced in a correct manner. I would take back anything to Walmart if it was broken or not as avertised on the box. If they are going to take my money they better earn it buy making a good attempt a correct scale.
And it just looks stupid.

Whoa is right! Of course we play AAM! I'm just leaving the mutant oversized Hellcat that is ridiculously bigger than a Tiger in its big-old compartment in the tacklebox until we get a right-sized version.
Luckily the Hellcat isn't a must-play piece!
Most game companies, when they have a misprinted piece, offer a trade-in - I'm hoping WOTC will do the right thing with the mutant Hellcat.

I don't play the Hellcat cause...well...I find it's not worth the cost and I can bring out better units. Scale is a bit off, but nothing that would prevent me from using it. Try putting two Crocs together. Now there's a big tank. And it's the right scale! ;)

That's kinda funny in light of the size difference between the infantry and the tanks!

No no, don't get me looking at the infantry... or the size of the Humber in relation to other vehicles... no no. I've got my scaling "issues" limited to total antipathy towards the Hellcat, must.. not .. let it... spread...

Okay, stats/facts.
M18 Hellcat - Length: (with Gun) 21ft 10inches Height: 8ft 5inch
M4A1 Sherman - Length (with Gun) 19ft 2 inches Height: 9ft
Hellcat wins by more than 2 feet. It's longer and has a lower profile. Mini's don't look that off to me.

Yea, but the Hellcat had a long gun.
Sherman hull length 5.84m (with or without gun this is the same)
Hellcat with gun 6.7m without gun 5.44m
Sherman ht 2.74m
Hellcat 2.6m
If you put the two minis sid by side you can see that the Hellcat is much too large. :)

Ditto.
I am actually trying to trade mine for something else, even though I love the stats. It just doesn't 'feel' right.

Did WOTC ever actually say that they were going to produce a corrected Hellcat? What I remember being said was that they acknowledged that it was too large and somehow went into production before anyone caught it. They went on to say that this would be corrected in the future, but I'm thinking this was a reference to the overall issue of incorrectly-scaled units, and preventing similar mistakes in the future, not a commitment to release a corrected Hellcat. I guess we'll find out for sure when WOTC Bob gets some official word.
Personally, though it's annoying for me or it to be out of scale, this is the sort of thing I can live with. I can wait until such time as a corrected one comes out. Truthfully, I've only used it once in about 50 or 60 games now anyway, and I'm guessing with Shermans being so much more effective and being only 1 point more, that most of you feel the same way.

I do play with the Hellcat, but that is probably due more to my having a paucity of allied armor for 300 pt. games (which I prefer). Having said this, I got saddled with a second Hellcat from a booster pack that I have refused to take out of the packaging. So, I guess to be completely accurate, I'm only playing with half my Hellcats. Guess that's a "half-a-protest". ;)
I think that in order to maintain its integrity and good faith with the customer base, WotC should do a free swap with a properly resized unit (I'll even kick in for the shipping). If GM, Ford, and Chrsyler can recall its products and do right by its customers, so can, and should, WotC.

Tsk, tsk, the Allied warmage just cast an Enlarge on the Hellcat, that's all. :p
Put a roof on it and the M18 can stand in for the M26. The Hellcat is one of my favorite AFVs of all time. Being a bit larger just makes it easier to admire.
Not to mention it can carry a US M5 3" gun, and gain double shot against vehicles. :D

WOTC Bob said that they have made a corrected Hellcat...I believe he specifically said he has an unpainted correct-scale Hellcat on his desk. They have not yet worked out a procedure to get this new mini out to players yet, though.

I'm not quite sure about this, but the actual RL Nashorn might have been lengthened a little to accomdate the changes. Of course, I do not have a Nashorn (yet), so I can't be sure how big the difference the minis have.

Speaking of units out of scale, has anybody noticed that NEWTONCAIN's stat card for the M1-A1 Abrams is only 101, while the King Tiger is 71??? Talk about your undercosted units! ;)
