Here the HHRC will discuss the proposal of putting a Theatre of Operations section on the cards we produce. I think that the easiest way to do this is to first agree on what theatres we want to involve (and how many), and then assign units to Theatres of Operation as appropriate.
I have two basic proposals for theatre of operations, and will welcome more suggestions as we discuss the issue.
Option 1: Three basic theatres; Europe (EUR), Russia (RUS), and Pacfic (PAC).
Option 2: Five major theatres: North Africa (NA), Western Europe (WE), Russian Front (RUS), Pacific (PAC), East Asian Front (EAF)
Option 3: Detailed conflicts: Early France (EF), Egypt (EG), Algeria (AG), Greece (GE), Poland (PO), Russia (RU), Western Europe (WE), China (CH), Pacific Islands (PI), India (IN).

As usual, I seem to be the oddball - I'd like to see Option 1 (simpler is better) with an addition of North Africa.

I vote for the idea and my preference is for option 2.
Option 1 needs north africa and the East asian front gives us an option for mixed allied groups. With PAC you have more ofthe classic island hopping of the US V Japan.
As an aside can anyone provide historically accurate abbreviations (Axis or allied just as a way to build flavour).
As for the third set it gives too much. And the differences would equally well be covered by using the second or first options with the date.

Whelp, nobody likes Option 3 (including me), so we'll rule it out.
Everyone (so far) seems to like the basic theatres of Western Europe, Russia, Pacfic and North Africa. I also like East Asia, since it includes the Chinese units as well as allowing for Britian vs. Japan in India.
As an aside, this will allow us to more accurately assign units that 'belonged' to more than one nationality, like the Stuart, by allowing them in the appropriate theatres.

I recommend Option two, but if were going to be specific and accurate about naming these theatres, go with CBI (China-Burma-India) instead of East Asia and South Pacific (Philipines to the Solomons) instead of Pacific. The last one isn't so important. For war buffs this adds a degree of clarity as these were the more or less offical designations for the two Asian theatres. The problem also arises as to the fourth demension past geography, time. That's what made option 3 a little appealing to me. The nature of the European Theatre and the CBI Theatre changed dramatically over the course of the war, but on the other hand an exclusive Algeria and Greece imho are hardly worth the trouble.

Okay, so our current theatre choices are either Four or Five basic theatres.
The four we have for sure are Western Europe (WER), Russia (RUS), North Africa (NA), and the Pacific (PAC).
The one we aren't sure about including is China-Burma-India (CBI, thanks Pasalades).
I'd like to push for the inclusion of CBI because it involves a different set of nationalities than we would see in a straight Pacific theatre. CBI would feature UK, Chinese, and Japanese forces, while PAC would feature primarily US and Japanese.
With respect to nationalities involved, North Africa and Western Europe are almost identical - the major difference is the particular units involved in the conflicts. I think if we're to include North Africa as a seperate theatre, we should also include CBI.
CBI also gives players more Japanese theatre choices - it would be 2 Theatres for the Japs, and 3 for the Germans.
I'll let the discussion go on for another day, and then put it to a vote.

The fewer the better. I think CBI is probably more important than North Africa, because as you pointed out, the equipment generally used in NA differed from that used in Europe only in the paint color.

The fewer the better, as Bob said. I'm in favor of Europe, Russia, Pacific and East Asia. No need to get any more specific than that - we can afford to be generic when we have access to such a limited array of playing pieces.

I like option 2, differentiating North Africa from europe could be important if sometime we decide to include some kind of rule like 'you have to pick at least 50% of your points from italian units on these theatre'

I like the five front idea with the following:
Western Front
Eastern Front
North Africa
China-Burma-India
South Pacific
Most of the books I have read use these designations

I think we've seen most of the arguments for or against various theatres in the thread, so I'm calling for a vote on the subject.
It seems the Committee is in agreement with the theatres of Western Front (WF), Eastern Front (EF), and the South Pacific (SP). Let me know if those aren't the names we want used, but I'm inclined to trust Cossackwarrior's designations.
Therefore I'm calling for a vote on the two fronts we're not sure about including: North Africa (NA) and China-Burma-India (CBI).
After we vote on the two disputed theatres, I'll write up a full unit list, and with some research we will assign each unit to its appropriate theatres.
North Africa: I vote yes. Many units were used here that were obsolete when the invasions of Italy and France took place. The Renault, the Lee, and several early-war British tanks effectively ended their participation in the war.
CBI: Again, yes. It's a great theatre for allowing the Chinese to participate and for including Japanese vs. UK battles.

I'd like to make a case for not including North Africa. As Bobsalt pointed out, the only real restriction for the NA theater was year, which we already have in the game. Other than that, both sides threw whatever they had available into the desert to defeat each other. Very few special units were created and/or deployed specifically to North Africa. Using just year restrictions enables North Africa to be played very historically.

That's a very good point. The main difference between North African units and Western Front units is based on year, so that does take care of it. In light of that fact, I'm going to change my vote on North Africa to no, to keep the number of theatres at 4.

The North Africa nomenclature is too limiting. I suggest that it be changed to Medditeranian (MED). The theatre I feel is sufficiently different from just Western Europe, and it has the advantage of seperately encompasing the campaigns in North Africa, including Algeria, Egypt, Sycily, and the ones in Italy, and Greece! Given the trends we're seeing in AAM a Medditeranian theatre being squashed in with Western Europe will muddle things up and create confusion as factions get fleshed out.
I'd like to add my two cents.
I think a third 'Mediterranean' Theater is needed for the European powers. If you rely solely on year to limit 'Western Front', then you'll have Italian units playable in Northern France, and this says nothing about the possibility of future Greeks, Yugoslavs, Dutch and Belgians fighting in the wrong areas.

There's a thought, since Italians weren't involved in the main thrust out of France. Committee, what are your opinions on a Mediterranian front that centers around Greece, North Africa, Sicily, and Italy?

My two rubles.
How did the Italian/Greek front compare with the North African front? Does NA match better unit-wise with the French/German front or the Italian front?
As for the Pacific, I like the idea of splitting the South Pacific and China/Burma/India. Weren't there also a few Russia vs. Japan battles?

There were very few of those - Japan surrendered very shortly after the Russians declared war on them. It's a negligible aspect of the war from a combat point of view.

The most important was Khalkin Ghol, in 1937, where Zhukov really got his career off to a start. Note that this was before the primary time frame of AAM.
I'll vote for CBI and a Mediterrean (which will include North African) theatre. I know that there was a comment made that there were no unique units in the Med/NA from the Western and Eastern fronts, but that is not technically true.
In North Africa, for instance, the Germans get to group their forces with the French (Vichy) to oppose the American landings in 1942 Morrocco. In fact, Vichy French forces subjected the American landings to heavy fire even though there were no Germans around to make them do so. Vichy French forces played no significant role in the battle for France in 1944.
In 1944 Italy switched sides in the war, and the Americans and the Germans BOTH get to use Italian forces with their armies in that year, with different factions fighting with both sides.
Rommel NEVER got to use Tigers in the Eastern desert, or in the battle for Egypt. The single Tiger battalion that did get sent to North Africa was used to defend Tunisia from the Americans.

Basic on Joisey's vote, we have enough votes (including mine for the Med) for all 5 theatres.
So the Committee's five assigned theatres for cards will be:
MED (Mediterranian: The war in North Africa, and the Allied campaigns for Sicily and Italy)
PAC (South Pacific: American and Japanese troops fight for control of the Pacific islands)
CBI (China-Burma-India: China and the UK fight Japan's land campaigns in mainland Asia)
WER (Western Europe: The German invasion of Belgium and France, the Allied landings in Normandy and the subsequent push that drove the Wermacht back to Berlin.)
RUS (Russian Front: The epic and world-changing conflict between the titans of Germany and the USSR.)
So now we need to decide our criteria for assigning units.
Do we want to go with common use or just participation? Take the Sherman, for instance. It saw action in every theatre of the war except CBI, but it's participation in the Pacific was limited to very few, and the lend-lease Shermans we gave the Russians hardly made up the bulk of their armor. So does the Sherman get assigned to just NA and WER, or does it get NA, WER, RUS, and PAC?
Once we decide that, we get to do lots and lots of research to assign each unit properly.

I could color code the areas. White type means readily available yellow type - rare(no more than one per 100pt build.
But I think I would prefer a unit totally in or totally out for each area rather than trying to get into army lists.

I think I would prefer all or nothing as well for ease of research, and we'll leave it to the players to sort out commonality themselves.
I propose that we include a unit if it saw action on a particular front, even if it was only for a few engagements - like the Pershing. So I think the Sherman should be listed in both the Pacific and Russian fronts.

Wow. This is super cool. I'm impressed with the Theater organization that's been going on in this threads. This commitee idea of yours is working out really well.
So the Committee's five assigned theatres for cards will be:
MED (Mediterranian: The war in North Africa, the early Axis assaults in Greece and France, and the Allied campaigns for Sicily and Italy)
. . .
WER (Western Europe: The Allied landings in Normandy and the subsequent push that drove the Wermacht back to Berlin)
RUS (Russian Front: The epic and world-changing conflict between the titans of Germany and the USSR.)
So now we need to decide our criteria for assigning units.
Are you sure you want to include the 1940 Fance, Low Countries, and Scandinavian Campaign in the MEDITERRANEAN theater? I think it makes more sense to to put these units in the Western Europe Theater, and just rely on Year to make sure Tigers don't fight Renaults.
Only Southern France should be in the Mediterranean theater. (Mussolini's failed invasion, Operation Dragoon, etc.)

You know, you're right. I was thinking about the theatres from a unit involvement perspective, but it makes more sense to keep the theatres confined to their own geographical area. I will amend the theatre post.

I think the more options for each unit, the better, unless there are serious historical issues with certain units being in certain theaters. After all, it's a game and we're trying to have fun with our little micromachine tanks. Thus we should see the following units available for the Russian front, for example:
Sherman
Lee
Stuart
Jeep
M5 Half-Track
Valentine II (present at Kursk through the Lend-Lease)
Vickers (this is the company that made the famous Maxim machinegun, which is more or less identical to the British Vickers MG)
It's up to the players how strictly they want to enforce rarity, etc among such units.

I know we don't have a final abreviation list yet but here is a visual solution to the problem.
My tendancy is to ingnore any operator based SA (vetern crew, ss determination etc) when a vehicle is being used by a nationality other than the one designated by the card. Same points cost for simplicity.
vehicle SA's stay unchanged (Extended range etc)
where the theatres of war are listed I can list other nations that had them and the theatres they were used in.

Excellent idea for the multinational pieces. The Sherman was given to a whole lot of nations, including Free French and Polish forces (not the E8 variant though, usually the more regular ones.)

I used the E8 cause I had it hand just tos how the idea.
If we feel up to it and feel the need to reprice for the secondary nation I can a sub scripted or superscripted number with the base price. I have started on an anatomy of the card sheet too. I think we will need it.
We will need a place to post all this stuff too by the way. Suggestions?

I have access to some webserver space, you can send it to me and I can put it up there and link it in the forums here.
The occaional nationality-specific price is a good idea, but as you said in another thread that's a workload issue.
Here's a thought - Nationality specific SA's. Put the country symbol next to the SA, and the unit has that SA if it's being played as that nationality (along with a seperate unit price somewhere on the card).

Thanks for tidying that up. Embarassingly, I never saw your list. I guess I just saw Comassion's and responded to that off the cuff. I also was responding under extreme exhaustion at about 2 a.m. Glad we have someone with a little better grasp of WWII theaters to hop on this thread.

Edits: Added the Tiger to North Africa, added theatres to several other units, removed justification text (before changing theatres of other units, check previous posts for justification text).
Almost done - I couldn't find much on the halftracks or Anti-Tanks guns, nor any reliable information about specific Wermacht snipers / Officers. But we're awfully close to having a complete list - thank you very much, everyone who's helped.

You have Sherman in almost all theaters (that is right, Russians have plenty of them) "M4A1 Sherman: MED, WER, RUS, PAC", but T-26 (Russian version of vickers system, most common Russian tank in 1941) is only in Chinese theatre?
R-2 LT-35 was Rumunian variant of Czech Praga LT35, in German army named as Pz35(t), so it should have WER, (MED - I am not sure if there were some of them in Africa) and RUS in it's card.
Maybe all SS units (I am not sure about SS Panthers) should have MED, because LSSAH was in Italy, but this would be little confusing - SS units did not fought in Africa.
I asked about that earlier. I don't think the Committee members have actually voted on multi-national units, (and national SAs) that's why I left the Romanian and Chinese tanks as they are.

That one of the problems with the general MED theatre - several units fought in Italy that weren't involved in North Africa.
Thanks for catching the T-26 - although we don't have a current stance on multinational units, it should definitely be on the Russian Front, since it's a Russian tank.
I've updated the list with the revisions.
And what about nationality? Some weapons were used by both sides (and I do not mean captured weapons) - axis and allies. This is typical for French units:
"MAS 7.5 mm" soldier squad fought for De Gaulle's free French unit in Africa as well as for Vichy units on the axis side...
Most important is "Renault R-35" - used by rumunian and second line (antipartisan) german units in east front as well as Hotchkiss H-35 and H-39.
Obsolete French tanks (including Renault R-35, Somua, Char B1, Hotchkiss...) were also used by low quality field divisions in 1944 in Normandy.
They fought for axis against allies.

The HHRC is probably going to produce additional unit cards (after the first batch) to represent units of different combat experience and nationality.
