Avalon Hill needs more bookcase games. They fit on the shelf well.

Yes, I love bookcase games. None of the stacking and crushing of boxes that happens over long periods of time with other games.
And yes, to the untrained eye, they do not look like games. :D

I have so many bookshelf games I have a bookshelf just for them. Many people when they first come over say I have so many intersting books until they pick one up....

Plus they looked real studious and scholarly - lol.

Since games are getting larger, and, with more plastic 3-D units in them, double bookcase games could be made. Thus you still have a nice game that fits into your "library", thanks, Pellulo.

There was much talk last year of publishing a bookshelf-size version of Risk 2210 this year. I haven't heard anything more about it for some time, as to whether it's on or off. Is that something people here would be interested in?

Hi,
I've read a few messages here concerning remakes of old games, mentionned sometimes with a great deal of nostalgy, but honestly I don't see the interest!
I'd rather prefer to see new games with new ideas and new systems (there are so many possibilities) being published, or even new games using well known systems (used in those classics) that have proved their great value in the past!
I still have all my old classic games complete ("Afrika Korps", "The Russian Campaign", "Anzio", etc) and in perfect condition, so I don't understand which would be the interest to see those games republished now!
Even for those younger players not owning the originals, many of these old classics or out of print games, can still be found for fair (there are exceptions of course!) prices on ebay or other auctions, garage sales, etc
So, my question remains: what's the interest of these remakes of old games that some people are so enthusiastic about?
May be I'm missing something here, so if you can help, I may even change my opinion, if your arguments are valid enough...
Just as an example: I have the original "History of the World". A remake (perhaps nicer, but also more expensive, and anyway still the same game after all) has been published later. By no means I would buy it! I have no doubt that I prefer to spend my money on a new game I don't have. Or even if it is an old game published years ago that I'm missing in my collection. But for that I'd look for the original in any auction!
See what I mean?
Thanks,
Dolf

To an extent I agree. I too would like to see new games. BUT I DON'T think new systems are necessary to make a game good. Many of the old systems were elegant and needed no further development. Case in point "Fortress Europa", the epitome of the type. All too often these days we have developers and designers doing something different designing a game only to put their name on a new title, not because it makes the represenatation of the specific subject matter better .
Old does not equal bad, nor does new equate with good. There is just too much illogical thinking on these lines.

Hi,
Old games not equal bad, nor does new equate with good. There is just too much illogical thinking on these lines.
Did I say that?!... By the illogical thinking you mean my message?!...
Well, perhaps you didn't read well what I said, or my english is getting worst
Anyway, english is only my 3rd language, so I try my best... Sorry if I'm not clear enough :( [Just as a side note, would you be able to speak or write portuguese as I do it in english?!...]
BUT I DON'T think new systems are necessary to make a game good. I never said that!!!... Or at least it was not my intention at all!...
What I meant is that I would prefer to see NEW GAMES (rather than remakes) EVENTUALLY USING NEW IDEAS AND NEW SYSTEMS, but I would ALSO be glad to see NEW GAMES USING THOSE OLD SYSTEMS USED IN THE OLD CLASSIC GAMES, that have already proved their great value then, and in my opinion can perfectly be used in new games...
For example, I am a fan of the Area/Impulse system games published by A.H. So I'm glad that Multiman Publishing decided to make a NEW GAME (not a remake of an old game), using that system, but for a different historical battle, not yet
covered by that system, see what I mean?
Sorry for my poor english, but as I said, I do my best, so I hope you can understand what I mean ;)
Thanks,
Dolf

Whoa there hoss, none of that was aimed at YOU. I was merely expounding upon some thoughts with regard to new games and new game designers.
As far as I can tell, the ONLY thing you said that had anything at all to do with what I said was that you'd like to see New games designed. Other than that nothing you said had anything at all to do with what I said.
Time to cool your heels a bit.

Hi,
Sorry, I probably misunderstood what you say in your previous message
Nevertheless, the parts I quoted seemed a response to my previous message, as noone else used those terms, or spoke about old or new games, or old or new systems
Anyway, again I'm sorry if I heart your feelings, it wasn't my intention neither, just trying to have a healthy discussion and clear up any misunderstandings!
Happy gaming,
Dolf

Hi Everyone,
I agree that bookcase games look very attractive on the shelf, but so do the flat top games. For years I've had the flat games laying on a shelf in my basement-stacked one on top of the other-without any bowing. When I stack a game I stack it across the spine of the box below it since the spines of a box are quite strong. I stack them about 4 games high and have not had a problem with any bowing or crunching.
Old games with old systems are nice, but to do a remake with them using the old system would only cater to a niche market and a very small one at that.
Even were they to be redesigned with new color counters and mapboard, the rules are still lengthy on quite a few of them. That alone would turn off a youngin' who would much rather have a 3D figure to move around on a board than a flat counter; or would also want a more fast paced type of game that doesn't require several hours or his or her time.
However I would like to see a remake of Fortress Europa and The Russian Campaign as they were two of the old classics that I've played many times, but I've since sold them. :(
But I'm reservedly happy smile.gif because I hear that Panzerblitz is being remade by MMP. Check it out at http://www.craiggrando.com/mmp/
If I ever win the Powerball I'll invest it and make about $500 million dollars, buy all the rights to AH and the Axis and Allies line and start up a company called. 'The New Avalon Hill Game Co.'.....
