Hello All,
I was looking for help with an idea that has been nagging me for quite some time now. I know that there are units like Mortars and sIG 33 and the Sturmpanzer IV "Brummbar" but these units don't act like real Artillery.
With SAs like: Shrapnel, Blast, and Bombardment you can make a really nice artillery unit. Add in SAs such as: Inaccurate and Extended Range you can make some very nice Artillery units.
Examples such as the United States M7 "Priest", the German Wespe, and Soviet Katyusha are great examples of Self-propelled guns as well as well as the towed 105mm or 155mm towed cannons it can expand the artillery field even farther. If you were to then add the vehicle mounted heavy mortars (80-120mm) and the T34 Calliope or the above mentioned Katyusha Rocket Launchers you are getting some very deadly weapons.
While there are examples such as the StuG III and ISU-152 that were Artillery tubes converted to Direct Fire weapons (AT Guns) these systems did not provide the Artillery Support that has been lacking in the game we are using today.
I say use existing SAs (as listed above) and create true artillery units. My proposal is as follows:
Use Extended range ~15 to ~20 (may moderate this a little)
Limit Artillery to Medium and longer ranges vs Infantry and lower dice as the target gets closer to the unit, due to lack of adjustments in direct fire mode.
Inaccurate +2. With a Forward Observer (supplied by set III) reduce to +1 or 0.
Use Blast, Shrapnel, and Bombardment for all attacks.
Basically you would get a unit like this.
Unit: Artillery(towed)
Cost: UNK
Def: 4/4
Speed: 0 (must be towed)
INF (S/M/L): ~0/10/15
Vehicle (S/M/L): ~6/12/18
Unit: Self Propelled Artillery
Cost: UNK
Def: 4/3
Speed: 3
INF (S/M/L): ~0/8/12
Vehicle (S/M/L): ~5/10/15
* With SP Artillery you have a smaller weapon and shorter range. I would say ~10-12 on the extended range.
With a Forward Observer you should be able to Neutralize or reduce the Inaccurate to either 0 or -1. Although I don't know how FOs work right now. (I would love to see the rules for Forward Observers).
I think that the minis game would benefit from "Gun Bunnies" in the game and would love to see what the community, and the A&A team would have to say about this.
