Artillery question

I understand that when attacking with both infantry and artillery, the artillery allows the infantry to score a hit on a die roll of 2 or less. What I'm not sure about is whether the atillery also has an attack of its own, or if it only assists the infantry? Does teh artillery get its own attack roll? Thanks!

Operations Manual p.24 "When and infantry attacks along with an artillery, the infantry's attack increases to 2. Each infantry must be matched one-for-one with a supporting artillery. Artillery does not support infantry on defense."

Same page also lists artillery's atk/def as 2/2.

We've been playing it as the artillery does get to attack as well. So, if you have 5 IN + 5 AR then you'd have a total of 10 attacking @ 2. I don't see anywhere (and I have the Ops Manual in front of me) that indicates or even implies that the artillery loses its attack just because it's supporting Infantry.
