Last Thursday we experimented playing A&A Minis with what I call “Stratego” style. What we did was that both players numbered two sets of blank chits. We each then placed one set of chits face down (number side) on the cards that we had chosen to build our armies with. We then placed the corresponding numbered chit on the map face up. When two units (chits) had line of site we would reveal what that unit was and place it on the map. We even had a few dummy chits on each side, which represented locals and did not threat either side.. If a unit was in the line of site of an opponent’s unit but was in a forest, city, marsh or hill hex we rolled dice to determine if the unit in any of those hexes cold be spotted. The purpose of this approach was that armies don’t always know where the enemy is until they see them. My opponent had a good strategy. He was the Japanese army and he dropped a SNLF paratrooper right in the middle of my army, exposing a large number of my units. The only recourse that I had was to start moving all my tanks out in to the opening. I figured that it would be evident that they were vehicles because of their movement, so I might as well be aggressive with them.
Also each player could build any size of army that he wanted to from 150 to 250 points. The victory condition was that you would have to destroy half of the number of your total points. For example if you built an army of 200 you would have to destroy 100 pints of your opponent’s army. The objective was worth 50 points. The objective had to be occupied and uncontested to gain those points. So building a small army had a benefit.

Thats very cool. A bit like combat mission, you dont see all the units right away. That makes for tactics and surprise a mayor effect.
How dit the battle went, give me battlereport ASAP!!! :P

That is so cool!!
I would only expose the units in forest, city, marsh or hill if they missed a cover roll.

We used a total of 6 maps. We then added a number of terrain tiles to the maps, a large number of forest hexes and city hexes. The objective was in the middle of a large city, about 9-10 hexes. He gained control of the city with his paratroopers and moved his Arisaka and Imperial Sergeant in to support them. He was dug in, had possible cover and Banzai abilities. He had built a 150-point army and I built a 250-point army. Our unit count was close because his were cheaper to acquire. So all he had to do was reach 75 points, I had to reach 125 points. I assaulted the city with my Sherman tanks. He finally disrupted two of my tanks with his close assault along with a Banzai Charge. He moved in behind me with the Ho-Ni and destroyed my one of my disrupted Sherman tanks. I returned fire and destroyed his Ho-Ni. He now has 71 points(the objective 50+ Sherman 21=71). Now he again Banzai Charges with two Arisakas gets two rolls of 7 against my disrupted Sherman (rear defense of 3) and destroys me. He now has a total of 92 points and victory. My total points were around 60, a long ways from the 125 that I needed. My biggest mistake was that I left my infantry behind and I had no support to defend the Banzai Charge. I had a number of M1 Garand Rifle and flamethrower units for that purpose, but I moved my tanks out too fast. Normally I like to have 3 Sherman tanks accompanied by 2 Garands, flamethrower, Red Devil Captain and an Inspiring Lieutenant. Sometimes I will switch one of the Garands with a Vickers machine crew. Battlefield error on my part, and good strategy on his part, allowed him to win.

Hm, remembers me to the double blind games of Classic Battletech.
We often played such and it always was big fun.

We might try your ideas out next weekend. See if this same thing could work on a 1000 point game.
