View Full Version : Hex Size?

What size hex do you guys think is best for a custom table top map? I don't like the 2 inch hexes on the standard maps so I am making my own cloth hex map this weekend. I have see others using a 4 inch hex which I like, but I wonder if I would be giving up hex size for map dimensions. Assuming I play on a standard 84"x40" table top,a 4 inch hex would only give my a 10 hex width on the map, the two standard maps are 11. And a 21 hex length versus 16 on two standard maps.
Someone mentioned that 3 inch hexes are a little small for the larger russian tanks. But I think that is what I will go with to allow more maneuvering room on the map.
Any comments?
Thanks

I would say 4'' but I am making 3'' maps since that is what my box can hold at max. 3'' are still good smaller and does not take up as much room. Th reason I say 4'' is you can put more terrain in 1 hex than a 3'' hex.

In my custom map I increased AAM hexes by exactly 150% in Photoshop...that size seems to work well.
Edit: Here's the old thread on the topic, if you'd like to take a look.

I also know a computer program where you can have any hex size you want. PM for info. ;)

autocad works great for hex grids, takes about a min to draw and array it
then you can hatch the hexs with differnt photo terrain
or import it into photoshop or illustrator and fill in the hexs there

Thanks guys. I am using a 3 inch hex template to trace out  the grid on some heavy green felt cloth. I plan on making seperate terrain hexes that can be placed on the new grid to create unique maps for each game. These terrain hexes will be both flat cloth hexes with terrain painted on ( roads and such), and/or 3d terrain (houses\trees hills) built on stiff plastic hexes with felt bottoms. I chose the felt on felt scheme to hopefully eliminate hex skid that often comes with customisable mats. :)
I'll post pics when I am done with some of my repainted and slightly modded minis.

I was thinking of using 3" hexes when I was trying to fit a map board on one of my 20" by 30" foam core boards.
But then, I purchased some velcro and made up a master 30" by 40" foam core board(now have 3) and put fuzzy pieces of velcro every 1.5". I'm using individual 4" hexes which allows me more design flexibility.
The master boards can lay on top of most large tables and you don't have to worry about the overhang if you have space around the tables. The individual hexes can then be placed anywhere on the master boards to arrange your terrain the way you want. :)
I'll try to post some pics when I get some finished.

I like using 4 inch hexes. This way my large tanks can fit in side of them. It also works great with my buildings. Just giving my 2 cents worth.

I've see a few different custom maps and I have to say I much prefer 4" hexes, but if you are limited my table size 3" hexes should work just fine.
