Default Scenario CP-1: Island Fortress Betio

Discussion thread for Scenario CP-1: Island Fortress Betio, and the new maps to go along with them. Please note: I went to great lengths to make sure these print out at the same scale as the stock maps, so please let me know if you are having any problems in that regard.

Hmmm, Beito. Considering that it's a tiny tiny strip of coral about 500m across, the death toll to take it is considerate; 6000 men died in total, from both sides. That's quite a messy situation.

Beito is really a major test of US amphibious operations. A lot of things didn't go right then, and a lot of lessons were learnt; in a sense, Beito saved a lot of lives later, by getting rid of practices that didn't work, and by highlighting what kinds of oppositions/ obstacles can be expected.

Oddly, it seems that the US Marines' experiences in the Pacific weren't really shared with the US Army in Europe; thankfully, the Normandy beaches weren't as extensively fortified, or as fanatically defended. It might have been a wee bit more painful had things been different.

Yes, now I see it. Great work in the maps. It seems a very good scenario to play.

Looks great. The Japanese will have to be ready to hit anywhere with a fierce counter attack given they have to defend it all. The maps look amazing though. I would love to own some but I can't print them out.

I like the scenario, and like the ability to choose certain British units, basically as surrogates for historical U.S. units. However, the way I read the scenario, all British tanks are available, including the Churchill Crocodile. This would be a great unit for the Allies, and very difficult for the Japanese to counter.

My question to those more studied in their history than I, is: did the Americans actually use any heavy armor during assaults in the Pacific, which could be somewhat represented by the 7/6 defense Crocodile?

Even if an American general were to field 4 Crocs, the Americans will still find a bitter fight, with all of the Japanese units entrenched, and any Allied tanks unable to fight until they exit the water.

Great job on this scenario!!

Info on a fan-published, hardcover guidebook covering all 228 units is in my profile .

Not really. Most of the fighting on the Pacific fighting were by infantry. M4 Shermans and M3/ M5 Stuarts were present in some engagements, but they are typically used for support (as is the LVT/ "Amtrack"), rather than tank engagements. The terrain simply didn't really favour tank battles.

I heard a rumour that Perishings were deployed into the Pacific late in the war, but never saw any photographic evidence to support this rumour.
