Question Varying attack/defense values by country

If you were going to tweak the attack/defense value of the units by country to make them slightly more historically accurate relative to other country's units, what changes would you make?

I'm trying to come up with a system that would be adopted wholesale; countries wouldn't pick and choose as with the National Advantage system.

I really don't know enough about the performance of actual units in the war to do this right.

I'm thinking that German tanks would attack at 4 if paired with an infantry (that infantry could not also be paired with an artillery; an infantry paired with a tank still attacks at 1). This would reflect the tactical superiority of German tanks in combined arms situations, a technique the Germans pioneered.

I'm thinking that UK fighters would defend at 5, that US fighters would attack at 4.

Japanese and Russian infantry would defend at 3 when paired with defending artillery.

What are your thoughts?

That is an excellent idea! except youll need a D12 system because 6 variations is not enough to accomodate the "flavor" of such a rule.

example: (just get the idea forget the values they are not historical but are posted to demonstrate the futility in this D6 systsm)

armor: all move 3 cost 5
Soviets:3/4
German:4/4
UK:2/3
Japan:2/3
USA:4/3

Infantry: all move 1 cost 3
Soviets:1/2
German:2/2
UK:1/2
Japan:1/2
USA:2/2

as you can see we still have to fit in artillery!
Artillery all move 1 cost 4
Soviets:2/3
German:3/2
UK:2/3
Japan:2/3
USA:2/2

so to sum up look at what NOW is out of allignment. ON the cost ratio basis some units both costing more or costing less even within each nations unit pool become a better buy. The result is not consistent and clearly violates the basic "DNA" of the games design. IN this game the cheaper units are on average an increasing better buy and this is consistent with all the pieces. Under a D6 system with nation unit values this is out the window.

++++ to make the best of a bad situation try this:
one artillery boosts one infantry
one plane boosts one tank
one armor boosts the movement of one artillery to two

++++ for NA's you can see or download Anderssons NA's at axis and allies.org

I'm thinking that UK fighters would defend at 5, that US fighters would attack at 4.

++++ these advantages would need to be offset with something for the axis.

Japanese and Russian infantry would defend at 3 when paired with defending artillery.

Another solution is to basically add some new units?

mechanized infantry
Shock troops
SS panzers
Heavy artillery
self propelled artillery
marines
dive- bombers

etc..
