Default Stalingrad Battle

Turn 1

Obviously I wasn't able to get the colour copies out in time, but the markered map worked out fairly well. The Russian regular infantry were deployed first, followed by German regular infantry, Russian Guards, and finally German Veterans and armour.

In the northern factories the Russians take up defencive positions.

In the central and southern areas, the Russians are deployed more aggressively; lined up along the railroad and holding the majority of the hill.

The Germans win initiative; on the southern side Flampanzers race towards the grain silos while the infantry advance under heavy fire.

The hill and the area around it is a massive meat grinder, with both sides taking heavy casualties. The StuG is in an awkward position; there's not much room for it to go and if I'm not careful the Russian Hero will get it.

As for the Heroes, my Veteran forces managed to kill two of the three... though one came back. Sigh.

The Russian Southern Commander would make frequent use of the railroad; constantly shifting his forces closer then pulling back to keep the Germans at bay. Spotters on both sides are meticulously picked out and killed.

MG42s are being taken out my mortar fire, while my StuG gets pinged by a PTRD out in the open. Fortunately our snipers brought walls to hide behind so none were killed; a few fanatical snipers were though.

The Northern German Commander relentlessly pushes his forces towards the Tractor Factory. In response one Commissar kills another to inspire the troops.

Turn 2

On turn one I had held the Luftwaffe back, but now with the Russians in the thick of battle the Me110s were (relatively) free to bomb targets of opportunity. However several Russian troops deployed from the sewers that turn; four sneaking up on our mortars and the other two attacking a Panzer in the south.

The Partisans try to protect, while the Luftwaffe rushes to stop them. Only one Russian MG is left protecting the Silos, with German infantry advancing fast.

I send my spotter forth, expecting him to die but needing him to pick out key targets for our mortars; we've already lost half our spotters. Astonishingly he manages to dodge most of the attacks against him. The Red Oktober Factory is pounded and almost all of the forward defenders are killed.

The Russians are putting up stiff resistance; damaging a Panzer and shooting down a plane (with the sniper of course). Almost the entire frontline of the German army is wiped out in this section. I order the commander to hold the Silo at all costs, and keep pressure on the Russian pocket.

German casualties. As you can see, very frew Russians were harmed.

Slowly but surely the Russians are losing their hold on the hill. I've been unable to harm the Heroes again, but only they, a Cossack and two Grenadiers survive.

The 'invincible' spotter goes down waiting, of course, until after I declare him invincible. Still he did his duty.

The assault on the Tractor Factory continues; all over the map we've used so many disrupted counters we had to start using damaged counters as well.

Turn 3

There's a brief German boost in morale as I manage to get one of my infantry on the hill; but he is soon gunned down. All of my infantry fail to even scratch the heroes.

A Sniper in an excellent position outside the middle factory has been causing too much trouble. My StuG rolls over to deal with him.

An inspired MG takes out the damaged Panzer, but German forces are all over the objective; it's become clear that the Russains cannot hold the Silos.

Despite assassination attempts, Der Leiter is still alive and leading his troops. His squad of snipers have already picked off any potential threats. (He's not going to risk his neck unnecessarily you know!)

You know, i really dig the simplicity of your homemade map. Not to mention the stalingrad battle ground is awesome.

Did you base your map on aerial photos from the time of the conflict or other such historical information?

I was thinking if someone converted the ASL maps from Red Barricades and the upcoming Valor of the Guards (I believe MMP has a preview of this one up on their site) then we AAM players could have some interesting scenarios.

Der Leiter you've just inspired me to create my own hand made maps. Maybe i'll even get some colored penciles out

Great representation. I would say you managed to capture the feel of Stalingrad without the fluff of color maps. Nice work.
