Recently we've begun using Squad Leader maps to play AAM on. One of our latest France 1940 battles was played on a blown up version of one. The results are interesting and quite fun, though the hills are giving us some problems.
Forces French Player: Mixed Tank CompanyForces Each hill and each of the larger houses are worth 1 VP. Whoever has the most at the end wins. On the first round units from both sides quickly move on top of the hills to either side of the town (this pic shows the western half of the map). German infantry quickly sweeps into the city supported by some armour. The sniper and MG on the eastern hill are in a decent position overlooking both sides. The Mausers are sent in first as shock troops, with the more veteran troops held in reserve. The Allied armour (save the Renaults) are circling in from the sides, with a Char set high up on a hill. The Renaults, supported by some British Infantry, make little headway into the centre of town.

German forces are slowly being encircled in the city, but still manage to hold two hills and all most of the houses. However French armour is taking its toll on the Germans and their tanks are quickly whittled down. By the end the Allies would control the hills and have the Germans surrounded in town with no armour left. Terrain We found most of the terrain was readily adapted from SL to AAM. For now there's no difference between types of houses nor size/height. Hills were a bit different scale so required some fine tuning, but eventually we came up with a cross between AAM Hills and Bluff rules that worked out.

Have you concidered treating the hills as teared bluffs for LOS?(Never mind you did <grin>)
The maps look to provide nice variety. Clearly this terrain would mean a knife fight for armor. Those little R-35's were probably formitable on this terrain as they are in a "ridge to far". |

Excellent way of playing. I did this about a year or so ago. For the hills I used the SL rules for LOS on hills. It worked out well.
What scale are you increasing your maps? and who's producing them for you? I did three maps on my computor and very quickly decided I couldn't aafford to produce any more. I called Kinko's and I think they quoted me $80.00 to do a map. Heres a link to what I did: http://boards.avalonhill.com/archive...p/t-14541.html

I would go with the Deluxe ASL mapboards from Streets of Fire and Hedgerow Hell.

The only problem with ASL maps is there were only eight made. They are slightly larger than AAM maps. And like AAM maps after a while they become repetitive. SL has some 44? or more maps availble. Unlike AAM they can be matched up in any configuration. Roads always match roads, rivers always match rivers, trees alway match trees.

What kind of rules are you using for walls?
I see there are some hedgerows on that map. Are you just adapting the rules in AAM that are already for hedgerows or are you doing something different? I love the scale of SL/ASL and I really wish AAM was closer to that. I'd love to see some house to house/street to street fighting where infantry and small unit tactics are truly in their element, and where tanks, while still powerful, are at a definite disadvantage (street fighting rule from ASL anyone?). Good stuff DL. |

The Brumbar and BMW motorcycle are very good in street fighting. Also bring lots of panzerfausts and sheks.
American Flamethrowers and anything with strike and fade is fun. I have done a lot of urban play (different maps of course) -- but even with AAM you will find the need to change a lot of tactics. The AAM maps dont depict things at the ASL scale very good.

Der Leiter,
Very well done! Looks like you scanned, increased image size, printed and taped the maps together. What percentage did you use to increase the scale? What dpi did you scan the maps? (your quality looks good in the pics) How many map boads did you use? What were your rules regarding the hills? Do you allow units on a level 2 hill to see over blocking terrain? |
