I would have to go with the PanzerIII over the Carro just because the III is not instantly destroyed like the Carro is on taking a hit. You have to be very lucky to roll a 1 or a 2 on a six sided dice not to have your Italian zippo go woof! The PanzerIII's smoke screen ability can be a nice way for some instant cover as well as pulling up on the objective on turn 7 and smoking ,so no one gets a shot at it and leaves you with the win at the end of the round.
The Carro does have slightly better frontal armor then the PanzerIII and a better attack verse infantry, but it's flammibility is a huge drawback. In order to use them and get your attacks off you must win initiative and go first, or your opponet will try to go first and kill them off before they have a chance to do some damage. For the 1 point cost differance, the PanzerIII is the better buy just for the fact that you are guaranteed a chance to shoot back and do some damage, not like the Carro , get hit and go up in flames before retaliating. |

I would go for the Carro. 1 pt less, 8 dices vs infantry & covering fire SA are a big bonus to me. Not to mention that 4 frontal defense vs 3 is a huge difference when faced with allied units with 3 attack dices vs armor (vickers, halftracks, etc...). I tend to see them as infantry support, not MBT, and they satisfy me fully this way. Of course, they could be used in swarm tactics, but then I would prefer the PzIII because of its "smoke" SA.

My vote would be for the Panzer III for many of the same reasons stated by Panzerman989. It's much better to have the smokescreen from a functioning tank than from the burning hulk of a Carro. For one point difference, sign me up for the PIII. However, I really enjoy playing the CA's as an Italian patoon for North African scenarios, particularly on the Memoir 44 desert map as it looks pretty sweet with the Italian platoon on it. Then, you just pray for some fortuitous rolls by a benevolent opponent.

Panzer IIIF. Anyone matched a Panzer IIIF swarm against the Sherman swarm?

Although I haven't tried the "Carro Swarm", I am in the middle of a 500pt game where I used 8 Pz 3's. I lost them all over 2 rounds but I was able to take out 2 Rhinos, 1 Sherman and damage 2 more Shermans. This has evened the odds for my 3 King Tigers and 6 Pak40's (although the 101st has just dropped on my artillery positions and is in the process of taking them out).

Carro all the way. In the last axis armies I played the only 2 tanks I did have was a Carro and PanzerIII and I won. So why not use them both!

I have to go with the Carro, based on gaming experience. The Carro has a higher defense and better AFV dice (not to mention inf). When playing these lighter tanks, I find that the first hit is the last, so the Carro's "lighter" SA isn't the problem you think it is.
I've played both the Carro and the Pzr III in the same game and both need to use cover and hope they make their cover rolls if they hope to survive. In the open, they are both going to go down fast, so the only hope is to send them at opposing armor as expendable attrition units. Do not expect them to come back.

Carro all the way, but in battle reality I will try a mix of both soon.
I have found both pretty useless against a Sherman based 100 pt Aliied Army, but in a 41 environment they work both well. |
