The "Determination" special ability reads :
"Whenever this unit would be destroyed, roll a die. On a 5 or higher, the destruction is prevented and this unit remains in the game with 1 hull point." If my Exeter is struck and the strike exceeds the Vital Armor, destroying the unit, must I make the roll for "Determination" immediately or do I wait until the end of the phase? If I make the roll immediately, my opponent can continue attacking it... basically I need a clarification of when "destroyed" kicks in. Can my opponent choose to keep shooting it anyway if it is destroyed, or is it no longer a valid target until "Determination" is resolved? Would additional attacks, if permitted, result in additional rolls against "Determination"? |

The glossary entry for Destroyed states, "A unit hit by an attack whose successes are equal to or higher than its vital armor rating is destroyed. ... When a unit is destroyed, remove it from the battle map at the end of the current phase ..."
That indicates that destruction 'occurs' when the damage is received, not at the end of the phase, even though the ship remains on the map and might return fire. You need to make the Determination die roll immediately after the attack and could wind up making multiple rolls in a single attack phase. Steve |
